Weekend Travels

The bcbytheseahubby and I are in St. Petersburg…. for a the 2008 Florida Antiquarian Book Fair…and a minor league baseball game between the Devils and the Tigers….weather permitting.

Alligator Alley provided an abundance of birds along the way…more than I remember in the recent past…and no shortage of water…it seemed the “drought” is contained with the lowering of Lake Okeechobee fiasco…that 5 feet that just cannot be replaced.

The book fair was a pleasant day of seeing what makes collectors adrenaline kick in…Civil War….signed books…mysteries…or such specialized specific topics….one almost feels inadequate to inquire so as to appear ignorant in their presence.

We walked away with my hubby’s special interest items from the Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exposition….

Also found some Puck Magazine satire drawings from late 1800’s and early 1900’s …some also with the prized Columbian Exposition as the subject matter….and two I could not resist that spoke to me…

one was yellow journalism….one was Wallstreet and stocks…. how perfect with my recent posts on some newspapers we know well….and of course the state of stocks so many years after the cartoons were drawn!

The town is a little “out there”…beautiful by the water…a hotel called the Vinoy…with much in its architecture and history to remind us of the Boca Resort.

Seems the real estate is just as bad here…huge condos are going up….while no occupants are taking over all the new storefronts…with for rent and for sale signs everywhere.

Local news in their St. Petersburg Times…. www.tampabay.comĀ  storefront vacancies….waterfront closing 5 weeks early for their April Grand Prix….causing residents to feel slighted…candidates taking shots at each other…city asking for input from residents on re-development for their port revival…

and….a story of a City Council member who still cannot get the dog park he promised to his constituents during his campaign built!

Next big local story a candidate for sheriff is trying to overcome a 2004 discipline action that is clouding his race.

The hero today…Governor Crist…contacted by a reporter to helpĀ  open up government records that should show how government employees are collecting state pensions while still collecting state paychecks! Speaking of Crist…paper has a Veep-o-meter….says that making nice with Marco Rubio…a leap forward….but a rapid drop back…. due to the primary mess!

Money section…horse racing a major state problem… it’s not just Pompano and surrounding South Florida as anabolic steroids are front and center in this 3 billion dollar a year Florida mainstay. Back again…commercial brokers are offering free rent deals to fill offices.

The point?……LBTS has company…..in politics….in development….in the future of any town U S A!

Make sure to join your neighbors in town tomorrow…4 pm ….St. Patty’s Day….green attire required!
