Description of Incident:
A Pompano Beach man out for a swim Sunday afternoon in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea became the victim of an apparent drowning. The victim has been identified as William Joseph Herder.
At approximately 2:11 p.m., the Broward Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call from a security guard working at the Ocean Colony Condominium located at 1620 S. Ocean Dr. in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The guard reported that a man had gone out swimming in the ocean and hadn’t been seen for several minutes. Witnesses said the man swam out to a buoy and tried to hold on to it. BSO’s Marine Unit and the United States Coast Guard responded and searched for the man.
Within minutes of receiving the call, rescue workers from the U.S. Coast Guard pulled the man’s body from the water near Anglins Fishing Pier (Commercial Boulevard Pier) in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. It appears the man may have been caught in a current and floated south. U.S. Coast Guard personnel transported the victim via boat to the Lighthouse Point Marina and were met by Lighthouse Point Fire Department personnel. Paramedics worked to resuscitate the man.
The man was transported to North Broward Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:14p.m.
Per departmental procedure, BSO’s Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death even though foul play is not suspected. The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
