The Natives Are Restless

www.miamiherald.com

Today’s Fred Grimm  column adds another crinkle in this ever growing restlessness…at budget time…

Fiscal thuggery is just cause for secession….

So let’s start here…from the top down…

you know the old song…that goes…” You say tomato…I say tomato”……

for this post …”You say secession…I say De-annexation”….

Grimm writes about an idea from 1945 when a state rep. fro Miami named George Okell pushed for a vote to petition congress to carve out a 49th state out of a region tired of getting robbed by the all- powerful cracker contingent of the legislature…

The 1945 Miami Herald had an editorial championing the idea…

the reason…the majority in the  Florida House and Senate was the north…with less than 15% of the state’s total population …who kept shorting the south on roads, services and higher education….

South Florida provided 2/3 of the taxes collected…

It was nothing new….

Some heady words were spouted after two major disasters affecting the south…the 1926 hurricane ruined Miami and the 1928 hurricane that caused Lake Okeechobee to burst through the levee in Palm Beach County… by the State Atty. General at that time… to congress…

“It’s mighty hard to get people in other parts of the state interested in people from south Florida, as to whether they perish or not.”…

Fast forward…not much has changed…no matter that in 1967 a Supreme Court ruling supposedly put an end to the inequity…ordering the Florida legislators to reapportion districts by population….

According to what we still see …in 2007….we in Miami- Dade/Broward…contributed $7.15 billion and the state sent us back….$6.69 billion…in this 2008 budget year….we will get stiffed once more…

should we secede? Bye..bye Florida?

The BCbytheseahubby half heartedly joked last year as we watched the budget for Broward…LBTS and what was going where…the millage and so forth…

“Maybe LBTS should secede from Broward County?”…

after all for what we send to Broward county…look at what we get back…very little.

What exactly comes from the county?…not our water…that’s from Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach….

What services do they provide? Only thing that comes to mind… permits and inspectors!…..

If we kept all the money that we send to the county…we could bury all the power lines…we could cut our taxes…

we could be self sufficient….

What do we need the county for?….

The NBCA and the Palm Club are angry…no sewers on private property….the annexation agreement is having its methodology questioned…a  glaring disparity seems obvious ….the old sweetheart deal is sweet no more….so De- annexation is being discussed and written about by the Editor of the Futures paper…who happens to be the President of the NBCA….

Only this time those who want to break away are not the recipients of getting little in return…

they received more…too much …it seems…so why the desire to leave….

BCbythesea…opinion…because the last on the list…Palm Club…did not get  the installation of sewers in under the wire… with the OG in the majority…and a former Mayor who alerted the public…for whatever reason…a desire to set the newly acquired information he became aware of straight… as he declared… …on his way out the door…or as Palm Club residents assert…a vindictive act…for not having support for another term…

All three examples….State…Town…Neighborhood….the desire to leave…

definitely budget time…definitely restless!
