Subj: Notice of Intent Not to Renew Parking Permits

December 22, 2008
To Town Manager
Town of  Lauderdale By the Sea
Lauderdale By the Sea, Florida 33308

Notice of Intent Not to Renew

Dear Ms. Colon,

Due to the current atmosphere in the Town as created  by the actions of William Ciani and Commissioners Mcintee and Silverstone we have elected not to renew our parking contract with the Town.  In these trying times , L.B.T.S  can use its resources and energies in ways far more productive than  solving petty squabbles and turf battles.
While the trio mentioned above will surely consider this to be a surrender on our part, we do not consider it to be so. We consider our action to be our first step in helping to  return sanity to the governance of this Town. Our future energies will be devoted to helping the “adults” regain control of L.B.T.S.  In the past we, along with many others in this community, have made the mistake of  being involved only when our individual needs were at issue thus ignoring the many ethical and statutory issues that are plaguing our City. We have seen the “adult” members of the Commission and  the Community spend countless hours in  selfless  service . We intend to be a part of this effort and offer our services.
Please prepare a final accounting to reflect the diminishment of parking spaces during the term of the   contract.   Please give me a call if you have any questions.

My number is 954-465-7934 or [email protected]

Sincerely,

Louis Marchelos

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN …YOU ARE NOW FREE TO “ROAM” AROUND THE TOWN….

WE MADE THE PAPERS…OOPS!…

12/7/08 Sentinel Bulletin Board…

Monday

Potluck Luncheon, 10:30 a.m. at Jarvis Hall, 4505 Ocean Blvd., Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. $3 nonmembers; $5 members. Call 954-642-8785.

Not so fast…No Pot Luck…it’s the LBTS Garden Club Annual Christmas Luncheon…starts at 10am…luncheon…to follow…

Who got this one soooo wrong?…

SEA RANCH CENTER IS DOWN 1 TENANT…

Jay’s Body Works has left the area…due to a raise in rents…Jay relocated down the road in the Galt…34th street by the post office off A1A…he should be up and running by in the next few days…need to contact him…Jay Holstad…954-784-4877…Big Loss…for those who of us who loved to just stroll over for a workout…

NICE JOB!…

Really like the red and white holiday tree wrapping on the palms on either side of Poinciana and Commercial Blvd…along with Town Hall!…

MUTUAL RESPECT….

I often hear that the 2 new Commissioners are at odds or through with this writer…depending on the day…and the post….BUT…as written in the Sausage Series Category…the “problem” the Mc-Gang had with me…continues to this day …nearly a year after Clottey/Dodd won the election …….it was my belief that THEY ( Clottey/Dodd) should have the last word …and decide what THEY( Clottey/Dodd) wanted to do…because THEY (Clottey/Dodd) were the Candidates…and now as the new Commissioners…this writer still feels the same…imagine that!

You see …here in the civilized world of intelligent adults…( no college degree required)…we can agree to disagree about the subject…the position and the vote…and we do at times…….but we still maintain a friendship of mutual respect…sort of the anti-Mc-Gang theory of politics….and friendship…HMMM…..

HAVE YOU RECEIVED AN OLINZOCK OFFICIAL TOWN LETTER?…

I have not seen one up close and personal…at least not one that like those described by the many town residents and businesses…from the Assistant Town Manager…that have a common thread…in the recipients description of being put off and unsettled by the tone and the content…

Maybe a “mentoring” class should be in order for proper administrative behavior…both in person and by mail?….

PARKING PREDICAMENTS…

As we face yet another round of the age old question…free parking…or revenue…a few queries are in order….why do we have paid parking inside the strip shopping areas along Commercial Blvd…while the Commercial Blvd street parking is free?…

Would it not be better to do it the other way around?…First come…first serve…and if you can’t get in the shopping lot…you pay…like many other towns?…

Where are the owners in all of this…the owners of the buildings?…Are they prepared to cover the maintenance of their lots if parking revenue is gone from having no meters?…

One way or another…it does not matter how many times this item is tabled…it’s revenue…for our looming Parking Department….. only option otherwise ….cutting down this piece of the LBTS government pie….

This writer’s opinion…the bags are a waste of time and money…and destroying the meters themselves….forget them..see if it is not against any state laws to charge for parking on Commercial Blvd. If not it seems the number of spaces….would even out the revenue lost for not charging in the shopping area lots…then go back to the chalk…the 2 hours maximum and be diligent with enforcement..charge 24/7 on all street parking including near Poinciana/Bougainvilla…and initiate a mandatory resident parking permit…that offers the residents 2 hours…at meters….as a bonus for living in town…permit stickers can be matched with license plates…similar to Condo parking permits……Make employers responsible for their employees getting town parking permits that makes it easy for parking enforcement to see the employee permit sticker matches with license plate…parked in the proper areas…then forget the entry ways…and update the parking to the new credit card friendly boxes…brought up by the Vice Mayor…as seen in Buffalo …(previous post)…and put this issue to bed…

more to come….

Parking….. November…..2001….7 years…Down…? To Go…..

‘The Future of Parking in Broward County’

Parking Meters

‘On-street parking in commercial areas raises the issue of parking meters. Meters serve two purposes, one obvious – revenue – the other not so obvious but also important – turnover. Turnover means new visitors can have some expectation of finding a space. No turnover, probably the result of employees parking in front of the store, does not encourage people to stop and shop. While people can find parking meters and parking tickets an annoyance, they not only fill municipal coffers but serve the public as well by keeping alive at least the hope of achieving the American dream: an empty parking space right in front of my destination. It just won’t be free. There is a large body of information and technology concerning the placement, design and monitoring of meters as well as an entire business of collecting parking tickets. We feel that is outside the scope of this study.

All of the above parking strategies can be implemented with existing low-tech methods. High-tech parking can be seen in our future as well, however.’

Here’s The Scoop..#2…Parking Workshop/Commission Meeting 11/10/08 …We Are Not Alone…

November 11, 2008 by Barbara

‘Hollywood may end downtown

parking fees on

slow business days’

‘Those pesky orange envelopes bearing bad news to your windshield could soon be banished from downtown.

On the theory that free parking could drive more visitors downtown, Hollywood officials are studying the idea of ending parking fees on slow business days: Sunday through Wednesday.

“We should be putting out the welcome mat, not hurting ourselves by doing something counterproductive,” Mayor Peter Bober said.

It wouldn’t be cheap. The city figured to rake in $5.8 million next year through downtown parking-related revenues. Its budget calls for spending just as much, including $2.6 million for personnel, another $2.2 million for operations and $556,000 in parking garage costs. Free parking on Sundays alone would mean a $200,646 loss in annual meter revenues.’

Ihosvani Rodriguez

The Revenue question…is front an center with our neighbors also…here in LBTS…we are tabled once more…with a “straw Poll” in the next Topics Magazine…with the results coming on Dec. 16th….

BCbythesea…how about a “straw poll’ addition…on the entryway flags…entryway signs that were never voted on…and the Topics bi- monthly waste of money publication itself?

Why is it we were able to link up to the rip tide information so quickly …as we were informed of last night….but we can’t get linked up for an online “straw poll?”….

The audience for the 5 pm Workshop…and the feedback from the Chamber…take the bags off…but the die-hard…”bagman”…can’t take the leap of ending his “baby”…… so here we go again…

What a waste of an hour…a dozen came to participate…and the dais…well…they could have phoned it in…where they stand on the subject……same as the last time and the time before that…and the time before that…

What are they afraid of…listen to the staff…listen to those who came…listen to Chamber…and make a decision…

The Manager…. listed as one of the “major accomplishments” LBTS had last year …. decorative parking meters….YIKES!

Vice Mayor McIntee talked about the antiquated meters and boxes in the town…replacing them with the type that take credit cards…adjust the hours…cut down on personnel…not a new idea….but even borrowed…it has merit…only problem…why no foresight when these last ones were purchased….. and when the box was moved from Town Hall to El Prado still covered up…are those boxes meeting the same moldy fate as the bagged meters?…

Joan Garrett…our Parking Supervisor let that bombshell out last night…. the $2500 …fading blue eyesores are damaging the meters we have…with sweat and mold…building up underneath the covers…while costing the Town in man hours …bags on…bags off each week…not to mention…taking the enforcers eyes off the Friday night prime time…revenue tickets…(sorry LBTS parkers)…

Revenue is going to be found…if not with parking…how about….fire inspections!…..(WINK…WINK…from the Manager and Assistant to the Manager…last night )

more to come….
