Here’s The Scoop … Scene And Heard Around Town …

April 8, 2010 by Barbara

POINTING FINGERS?….

Dear Readers… We hear there may be some “finger pointing” going on behind the scenes after yesterdays gas leak on A1A …But that the “official” word is mum and is being brushed off…pooh poohed by Town Administration… HUH?…

There needs to be some answers and accountability after this situation…especially since we are afforded the opportunity to do so because it turned out not to be a major disaster…

Who knew what when?… Who was in charge the VFD or the BSO?… Those are at the top of the list of questions being asked about the gas leak and the order on Apr. 6th to close and evacuate the building…. If there was a mess-up by a top member of personnel in the VFD …who reports that to the Town?… The present Town Fire Marshal is also the VFD Fire Inspector and  therefore wears those dreaded “2-hats”….Therein lies a problem, in this writer’s opinion… who does he align himself with?…

As the Fire Inspector it was his job to inspect the building …We hear there were many code violations and there are red tags on the doors…so he and the VFD/Town were involved before yesterday… As Fire Marshal it is his job to call in Hazmat…we are told…so did he?… Someone dropped the ball on this gas leak…was it the VFD Fire Chief or the VFD Fire Inspector/Town Fire Marshal?…We already know the Town dropped the ball in its lack of notification to our elected officials and the lack of public information coming from the Town …period…. as the designated PIO for the VFD!… That too, needs to be addressed…as previously posted the VFD is a contracted vendor and as such should have its own PIO to answer questions as the other Town vendors do…

…………………….

While there are major problems with this hotel and others owned by the same owners….with taxes in arrears we are told…which surely impact not only El Mar Drive ….but the Town ….a look at the Chamber of Commerce site which now includes their  Sea Breeze monthly publication…included the following…
“PTOLEMAIOS PROPERTY LP/BEACH APARTMENT & EASTWARD INN
The Beach Apartments and Eastward Inn are located on El Mar Dr., just south of
Commercial, and are therefore very central and very visible in LBTS. We are just
receiving title to these motels, and our intention is to repair, restore, and
significantly upgrade them by the next tourism season. You may have noticed first
stirrings on the properties already. There are some corrections we must implement
urgently, and there are others that we will choose to do out of pride of ownership.
We are determined that there should be continuous improvement. However, as you
know, many years of neglect will not be undone in a matter of weeks. In the few
weeks past, we have been making an effort to understand the LBTS community,
especially the factors that have made it as highly attractive as it is. Having a
positive effect on the city to us means working in harmony with those factors. We
invite our new peers in commerce to tell us how our restoration efforts might best
contribute towards the well-being of the neighborhood. We believe you will find us
mild-mannered, responsive, and congenial business neighbors and we look forward
to becoming a part of the business community in LBTS very much. The new
management is on site, and also the investors may be reached at:

BC- Let’s hope these new owners hold true to their words….

We hear the Town Manager is busy trying to play catch up to her deeds of the past…So many were questionable at best…Is she trying to cover her tracks?…She is continuing in rapid fire her …”As you recall” statements… They are coming fast and furious ….and she is digging a deeper hole to climb out of…in this writer’s opinion…

Town Manager Colon in a memo dated March 31, 2010 ….”as you recall, some members of the dais and citizens do not want to have a single stream container.””Choice, however, continues to collect the LBTS recycle bins that residents put out for collection of recyclable items.” “I am conducting a survey to find out how many municipalities are Single Stream Recycling in the County. I am just curious.”EC/mi

There was no negative feedback on Single Stream Recycling….only positive feedback was heard… from Commissioners and residents…No survey is needed ….a simple Google would suffice… This writer did so…”Single Stream Recycling in Broward County”…What popped up……Single Stream Municipalities….Parkland/Coconut Creek and Lighthouse Point….OOPS!…Memos and surveys…another reason this Town Manager needs to go…

Next up on the draft agenda for the 13th…the Town Manager has put on an approval for an RFP for a Realtor for the offsite west warehouse…She started in a March 11th memo in response to then-Comm. Dodd ..”I sent a memorandum dated Feb 11, 2010 to the Town Commission that upon Commission approval a RFP would be prepared if desired”…The Feb 11, 2010 memo was previously posted  (Scoops- Feb 21, 2010)…and it showed a time line of inadequate service provided…Also left out of all of the Town Manager’s memos and dais statements was still is no response or taking any responsibility in not following the direction given by the prior Commission of a 6 month contract for the sale of the warehouse (prev. post)…..and then for it to come back to them to make this decision…Town Manager Colon never did that…She just let it stay with the company that she and her Asst. TM JohnO chose to recommend to the Commission for over 2 years!…Add to that the Town Manager has put her item on under New Business…4 items ahead of the New Business item put on concerning and addressing the warehouse by Comm. Vincent…Shades of a the Town Manger doing a “Dodd” on Vincent!…Ouch…

There’s another “big one” Town Manager Colon did just yesterday…. Now we know why she and Town staff were not on top of of the gas leak situation……..she was busy “personally” dealing with the Attorney General Opinion sent in by Town Atty. Trevarthen on March 31st…….(prev. post)….This will be posted next …

Note to Readers…the upcoming Purchasing Manual “find” is still coming…

more to come…..
