Here’s The Scoop…A History Lesson…CIC…Accomplishments…

October 28, 2008 by Barbara

THE HISTORY OF THE CIC……..

‘On a brighter note, our own members have initiated and worked successfully to pass the following:

* The 1998 Height Limit Charter Referendum (3 stories over 1st floor parking).’
‘Along with the 2004 LBTS Voters-Rights Amendment, one of the new ‘CIC’s greatest accomplish-

ments was the introduction by petition – and the passage, despite fierce campaigns by developers and pro-development commissioners, of a townwide 44 ft. height limit in 2006. This charter amendment will prevent our barrier island from overdevelopment, limit further congestion along A1A, and preserve the Town’s low-rise image. The amendment also includes a provision that takes residential rezoning out of the hands of the Commission and requires referendum votes on any rezoning whatsoever in residential areas.’
BCbythesea…question is how fast will this too be deleted from the defunct CIC website?….

Here’s The Scoop…Chiari VS Bogdanoff

October 12, 2008 by Barbara

IT WILL BE A HARD DECISION FOR LBTS RESIDENTS….AGAIN…CHIARI VS BOGDANOFF..

“The Florida House District 91 race has a well-funded, two-term veteran facing a persistent challenger. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, will defend her seat against business consultant and Democrat Chris Chiari, making his second run for the position.

In their 2006 faceoff, Bogdanoff won 54.8 percent of the vote to represent the district of 133,000 mostly white residents of waterside communities stretching from Boca Raton to Hollywood.

But it may not be a slam-dunk for her this year. While the district has 38,924 registered Republicans, 30,662 Democrats and 19,936 unaffiliated voters, its percentage of Republicans has shrunk 9 percent in the past decade and GOP politicians face voter anger about the economy.”

This is a tough choice for this writer…having more one on one time spent with Chris Chiari at the beginning of the LBTS campaign previously written about in the” How The Sausage Was Made” series…check category..

At that time Stu Dodd was the CIC Chair and I was Vice Chair…

Chris came to a LBTS Commission meeting and sat near me….he was treated poorly by then Mayor Parker…and made a few comments…which at the time… for this writer…. being fully immersed in the politics of those days…made him right in line with where we were coming from…

I made an invitation to him to come and speak to the CIC members at a regular meeting…he was enthusiastic…being a big supporter of our causes…

As Stu and I took over the leadership roles of the CIC we wanted to expand on what the CIC meetings would offer to the members with different speakers…from both parties…which would also add to the validity of the CIC being an organization with clout…and eventually through word of mouth in the political campaign circles…build the CIC up to becoming a must visit group for any candidates to include on their quest for office…as is seen in other communities…

Well …one problem…the former Chair…McIntee had other ideas…the CIC meetings were to remain the “McIntee show”..where all would sit meeting after meeting enthralled in all things McIntee…the “stories” the McIntee “David VS Goliath”…but people were tired of it…and saying such behind the scenes…

As the “Sausage series” presents…we had a huge fight where McIntee badmouthed Chiari…misrepresented Chiari’s profession and eventually did his “bully” thing…if Chiari came to the CIC meeting he would not…and if Chiari helped with Stu’s campaign count him out…

We went with Chiari..on both counts…and McIntee along with pal John MacMillan and wives “Boycotted” the Chiari CIC meeting…proudly….

Note: if Chiari does win… we will witness yet another famous McIntee 180 …count on it…

Chris came…was a hit…and also went on to join us in a few Dodd campaign committee meetings…offering sound advice…and never badmouthing McIntee…just providing classy responses to McIntee’s assertions… setting the record straight McIntee that was way off base… surprise…surprise…and giving us the benefit of his experience from his own campaign…

We went on to invite Ellen Bogdanoff to continue on with this well received visit…also to be at the CIC regular meeting at the “Surf Club”….but in true McIntee fashion…during a contentious “pizza night” where he was losing …support for his overbearing ways within the CIC…and the Chiari situation…he needed to “one-up” with Bogdanoff coming to Jarvis …since it had just become apparent at that time the CIC could indeed use Jarvis Hall for televised events…after many years of being informed otherwise….

This event went back and forth and sideways until it finally panned out…CIC members who were Democrats were furious…the Old Guard challenged it…and it was up in the air all together due to a vote in the House that might have required Rep. Bogdanoff to stay there…

Fortunately she came…but the hall was rather disappointing due to the CIC-Old Guard divide…that continues..with events today…

She was personable…and quite informative…easy to see why she had gone so far within the House in her short time there…

Both candidates have much to offer…in this writer’s humble opinion….both have the best to offer LBTS…and both will be responsive to our town as we head into these uncertain times…

For me it will be hard…for Rep. Bogdanoff has the connections…in place…and Chiari…on a personal level showed he has the drive and the smarts to represent us…and stand up to the status quo…

more to come….
