POA

5/14/08

The POA met in Jarvis Hall…in attendance approx. 30….

Featured speaker…

Broward County Commissioner Ken Keechl….

He represents 14 cities…up and down the coast from Deerfield Beach- Dania Beach…fanning west to Wilton Manors and Oakland Park…

He has been our Rep. for one and a half yrs… laid out his campaign platforms…what he has accomplished and what he is working towards….

An attorney who gave up his own 30 person law firm to serve….full time…

Both a businessman and an environmentalist….

“Broward County has a bloated bureaucracy …don’t let anybody tell you any different.”

Last year he worked on lowering taxes…which was around 10% of the budget…

We are in a budget crisis…but need to make sure our social safety net will still be in place…

Comm. Keechl talked about the recently reported Port expansion plan….

a plan that calls for widening the Port for larger cargo ships…for business…

but that the environmentalists are up in arms about the destruction of the mangroves….

Keechl told the audience that he and his colleagues had a workshop …resulting in getting 80% of what they wanted…

Where it stands now…the Port Director will add to the mangroves….Keechl will make sure the additions are the correct size …

Some interesting history he found in the process….

in the late 1980’s a previous commission after an expansion enacted a permanent conservation easement…

which he will see is maintained….

One of his platforms as a campaigner was green space…

he has carried that on… with a comprehensive land use plan… …involving the development of golf courses….

The barrier islands have the least amount of green space…and he is concerned with over development and developers …along with elected officials…and their allowing too much density in their projects…

He alerted all to the fact that in most cases the final decision …rests with the Broward County Commission…

Beach re- nourishment was also addressed …and he covered the mistakes made in past projects…in which a lot of money was thrown out…at the county level…

There is money in the budget for this project…

He is for the extra penny that come from the bed tax to be set aside for for the beach….not for convention/hotels or stadiums…

He also made the statement that the county pays the money first and then gets paid by the state…

Comm. Keechl ended his speech by informing the residents…

“I don’t care if you’re straight/ gay….black/white…no labels…if you have a problem contact my office.”

“If they can’t answer it they can put you in touch with who can.”…..

Former Comm. Wessels…inquired about the airport situation….

Comm. Keechl quickly responded this is one of the worst managed divisions…aviation…with a new director…

Comm. Keechl…is still not sure about the new hire……but seems to think is headed in the right direction…

right now the time average delay in flight time is 6 minutes…estimate for 2015 is 26.2 minutes if nothing is done…

a plan for an extension of the southern runway is the first plan…will destroy some mangroves…but will save on the pollutants released in the air…

He also talked of his due diligence in the process of hiring the new director who was to receive a 2 year “golden parachute”…how at his insistence…it was scaled back to one….

That concluded his presentation…A few POA “housekeeping’ items from board members…

The Mayor was introduced for a speech…

she was abundantly clear…she wants to hear from the residents…a request made many times in many variations…

she stated her platform of unity…and described her views on the commission thus far…(see previous scoop)…

as moving stronger…strong agendas…”make the motions and then …we move on”…

again she repeated her most important point…”we move on”…

also mentioned the Adopt A Street program…and a hurricane prevention workshop that will be put on by the town…

Jarvis Hall 6/3/08…9-2 pm….

she spoke of the budget…capital improvements…asking residents for input on CIP projects…

spoke of her 21 vote win…and being very happy and honored to serve….

A repeat of the Scenic Highway program…that took place last month…was the replacement for a featured “historian” who could not attend…

adjourned…
