Malvina Hoffman

A visit to the Field Museum….

usually while everyone else is looking at major exhibits I like to see what does not jump out at others…

today it was these incredible bronze sculptures that were in the halls between exhibits….

the artist was Malvina Hoffman….. commissioned by the Field Museum she traveled the world to complete this exhibit called “The Races of Man”…for 5 years

The story I was told was that this exhibit was called the “Hall of Man” and was intact from the 1930’s until the late 60’s…. then relegated to the basement and in the dark corners of the museum without labels….due to the times…..

Sometime in recent years they have been brought back to more prominent placements…..

Upon returning back to the bcbytheseadaughter’s …. I googled Malvina Hoffman…

She has been called the greatest American artist you have never heard of…. the American Rodin…

she actually studied under Rodin and Gutzon Borglum…creator of Mt. Rushmore…

for the museum she created 91 full size bronzes and 13 marble sculptures….

when the museum broke up the exhibit….1/4 of it ended up in Cedar Rapids….

an incredibly interesting woman…what a life…what an artist….worth the Google…
