Here’s The Scoop…Mar-Oct. Turtle Season…Full Stop…Or Proceed With Caution…

WHICH IS IT?….NESTING SEASON REQUIRING A SCREECHING HALT…OR TURTLE MONITORING AND PERMITS…

This writer has been told that one of the excuses used for not delaying the pavilion project until after “season”is over……being used by the town administration after keeping it from the public…. from 6/6/08 that Broward County had given us an extension on the pavilion grant until 10/19/09…is due to Mar-Oct. nesting season…thus no construction would be allowed ……HMMM…

At the June 4,2008 Pavilion bidding meeting …previous post..scoops category….the architect…said after being specifically asked this question …there would be turtle monitoring…

A quick look online seems to support the architect’s assertion…permitting and monitoring would allow the project to progress!…

It is very disturbing to see what has happened with this pavilion project due to the Town Administration……the major changes…in the look and what it was supposed to contain…. the reasons for not following through on what was approved…blaming it on time and money… do not add up….with these new revelations…

Again…just think …if all this went on 2 years ago and the Manager’s name was Baldwin…the Mc-outrage…would be deafening…what gives?….Blind loyalty… covering something up…and circling the wagons…all sounding uncomfortably familiar?…

Dear readers….put this in your “file” as you look forward to 2010….

Excerpts from Broward County Environmental Protection site….

(7) If project construction is to occur during the sea turtle nesting season (March 1
through October 31), a sea turtle monitoring and nest relocation program shall be
implemented in conjunction with the project. FWCC guidelines will be used
during any sea turtle monitoring and/or nest relocation activities related to project
construction. Nest surveys and relocations will be conducted by personnel with
prior experience and training in nest survey and relocation procedures, and with a
valid FWCC permit. Nests shall be relocated between sunrise and 9 a.m. each day
as per permit holder guidelines from FWCC, and the relocation will be to a
nearby self-release beach hatchery in a secure setting where artificial lighting will
not conflict with hatchling orientation.
(8) If project construction is to occur during the sea turtle nesting season (March 1
through October 31), if beach fill is to be deposited at night, and if the effected
beach area is expected to exceed 100 feet in length, the effected beach shall be
surveyed hourly for sea turtle nests. Any nests discovered shall be relocated prior
to fill placement in that area.
(9) If project construction is to occur during the sea turtle nesting season (March 1
through October 31), all construction pipeline shall be placed parallel to shore and
as far landward as possible without impacting the dune system. All temporary
storage of pipeline and equipment shall be off of the beach whenever possible, or
as far landward as possible without impacting the dune system, if beach storage is
required.
