LET US ENTERTAIN YOU….
Round and Round they go….who will be the “lucky” elected officials this year…to partake in the annual Waste Management Soiree?
Readers will remember that this writer was none too convinced that it was the “right thing” to do…when the incumbents attended the $500 thousand event last year…..in Orlando…at the Florida League of Cities…
Oh yes…we heard all the “reasons” why it was good politics…benefiting the town….in some way….but it did not pass the “smell taste” for our hometown commissioners or any elected officials who will the be sitting at the “bargaining table” when Waste Management comes to call….
Come on…last year…the incumbents heard loud and clear the “burden” Waste Management was putting on their constituents…with higher costs…the required larger size of cans…or a dumpster….
Why…. the “tomato lady” Rosa…CIC member…recently up for CIC- Citizen of the Year…large hearted volunteer for CIC events….came to the podium often to plead her case… the impact this company has on her …and fellow business owners….asking for relief….
So how can those same commissioners….find any valid “reason” to attend an “event” …put on to the tune of a half a million big ones…knowing the hardship….of those they represent?….
This year…indeed…no big “LOBBYING” party should even be necessary in Tampa this August ….especially as Waste Management is about to acquire Republic Services…to further limit our town’s options…….
One more reason….at the MPSC meeting …the guest came forth with some “eye-opening” information….all about how Waste Management makes money at “both ends” of recycling…from our town….
She offered up ways to drastically change this situation… …with companies… she is aware of…that actually COMPETE with Waste Management…who would cost us nothing… for the receptacles….for hauling it all away or even making us money instead!….
This time….Commissioners…Mayor….elected officials……send them your regrets!….
