Here’s The Scoop….”It’s The Money….Honey”….

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE MONEY….

Whether it’s today’s Sentinel article on March elections…VS November for saving the money…. the Pelican Hopper….lifeguards on the beach……or the VFD…and the Public Safety Complex…the response is always the same..”It’s the money…Honey”…Especially now…in the economic free fall facing all….it’s the money….it’s the money…it’s the money…..

Many who wanted to keep the March municipal elections…including this writer are now having second thoughts…especially with a price tag involved …..with all signs pointing to that price tag  surely  going up…….In Palm Beach County the Supervisor Of Elections is already looking for ways to charge more to the cities……and with numbers being crunched after the recent news reports that the cost went way over the estimated budget for early voting costs in the last Broward County election…. it’s  a sure bet our Broward SOE will follow the same path……

Right now on the 3/10/09 Regular Commission meeting …(previous post… LBTS agenda/meeting 3/10/09)…it is up for discussion on doing a separate Nov. election for the laundry list of referendums…heights….or did we REALLY mean 33 ft. on the last election in 2006…..VFD…no way to hold them accountable or replace this  contracted independent corporation without a vote…meaning….$$$$ for a special election …lifeguards on the beach….and if by chance a 3rd vote comes from Comm. Clottey for a “2-Hats” referendum…(not holding our breath on this one)….the cost right now…is projected at $13,986…or as Comm. Silverstone likes to say of the “taxpayer’s” money…”13 and change”….

So do we stick to our guns …and pay the price to have municipal elections in March……or do we decide to backtrack…reconsider the costs…and join the other municipalities…for Nov. elections only?…One caveat to this dilemma though ……if a change is made ASAP…we could be stuck with “2-Hats”…until Nov. 2010….and the cost of that happening might offset any amount of savings…on any level…both morally and in the pocketbook….

The Pelican Hopper…(previous post scoops/ LBTS agenda/meeting categories)….is also on the 3/10/09 Regular Commission meeting…for the Commissioners to decide …do we keep it and pay…or do we consider the cost per rider…$100 thousand estimated for 09-10…with approximately 7-9 riders per hour using in (in or out of season #’s?)….and if we have the money…do we use it for this…or perhaps for lifeguards by the pier?….

BC- While we’re on the subject of the Hopper…Why do we pay for it to go beyond city limits?…It should only be used…if voted to carry on service…within LBTS…let riders who want to go further…use the regular Broward County buses ….

How about 4th of July?…It’s time for the Commission and the town residents to decide …Pay the big $$$$ for a big bash yet again for hotel guests and tourists…A “kickoff” for a “2-Hats” re-election campaign…or a low key budgeted small town parade…with VFD hot dogs…and VFD fun and games…geared towards the town residents…cognizant of the times….

BC- where will the fireworks be? …Off the pier?…HMMM…Especially after July 4th, 2009  Co-Chair VM McIntee’s recent ongoing actions to cause the Marchellos brothers trouble with pier egress through the alley…the pier sign…(again on the agenda for the 3rd time 3/10/09 previous post LBTS agenda/meeting category)….and their Athena outdoor dining…This should be fun!…

Now let’s talk VFD…as much as it means to McIntee…and a few others…the history…the tradition…this too came down to money…and to say otherwise…is to be totally out of touch with the vast amount of voters…sitting on the sidelines  all too ready to first vote any VFD referendum down…and then to replace the “2-Hats”Commissioners….next March…referendum or not…because it’s the money!…

The voters came forward for the VFD and AMR to cut the money being spent for BSO….period!…

The voters are not happy being  “hoodwinked” by the 2million dollar purchase of the Public Safety Complex…No matter what you put in in it…besides VFD/AMR and BSO Police…A place for seniors? (as stated in the 3/6/09 Mc-FurthBTSTimes Truth Mc-Hiss Detector- no specifics for what purpose and where in the complex?)….or a salaried lifeguard public pool for swimming classes…It still wiped away all the “savings” for what is still…. with a can of paint…… using the municipal workers to cut costs……and ADA required lift…still a crappy hotel!…

The Town’s warehouse sale touted by the Manager as “a wash” for this purchase…is still not sold!…The Manager has given no updates  at Manager Report time on the dais ala the Pavilion changes…Making this still a lame excuse for the buying of this 2nd rate structure…along with the other “reasons” for buying it…The trailers that are not allowed …and the space required for AMR…and the VFD…24-7 station watch…The trailers could have remained for a few years…as they havefor quite some time…….AMR… we now know is leasing space from Holy Cross Hospital at their nursing home facility a few blocks north of Commercial and could have leased in town as well….And again according to Mrs-Mc-Truth Detector in this edition of the BTSTimes……the VFD are not sleeping at the complex…anyhow!….

BC-We hear that they were supposed to sleep there…but the criteria to allow for it could not be met to allow it…The Manager even tried to see if “Lazyboy” chairs could get around the requirements to allow for  theses overnighters……Add to that the number of Assoc. VFD members that have left since Oct……..and the non- response to medical calls in the overnight hours…(stopped soon after the Oct. 1st contract began…per Chief Perkins at the podium at reports)…..and this “reason” also goes down the tubes….

What a difference a year makes….

Last year on March 11, 2008…

Regular Commission meeting…the first full- fledged meeting of the new majority after the Jan 29,2008 election..

Commissioner Comments…Vice Mayor McIntee…

” Vice Mayor McIntee believed AMR was qualified to provide emergency medical services. HE SAID THERE WERE NOT MANY FIRES IN LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA AND THE NEED FOR PARAMEDICS WAS MORE THAN THE NEED FOR FIREFIGHTERS. Vice Mayor McIntee believed firefighters overpriced themselves.”…HMMM…

March 2009…

We have Vice Mayor/Deputy Chief McIntee following all AMR calls…getting there BEFORE AMR…and costing the VFD $$$$ for “medical calls-other”…headaches…bleeding…diabetic…..just to play “Vigilante’s Fun Day”…in his 24-7 in and out of Town limits/on and off duty and Official Commission duty SUV…precisely because…the need for firefighters in LBTS is so small…..

Any doubt who’s behind the excess costs…just look at the past week when the VM sailed out of Port on a cruise……and his return …yesterday…with the calls of the VFD following …(or preceding) AMR 0n 911 dispatches…accelerating in response times for the VFD within minutes of his return!….

We hear the VFD will need to come back for more money…if this keeps up…and the VM is not at all concerned…he’s got the majority…he’s got the Manager in his pocket……and he just wants to  play…..for as long as he possibly can…

The consequences…barring an accident of VFD personnel making their way to the station for these “Other medical calls”to receive the $10…..or the fire engines getting in a crash on these needless excursions….won’t be seen until they come for the money…and the next election…when those that oppose it all…….must remember “It’s the money…Honey”…It’s the money!…

more to come………
