I’ll give em’ credit…the BTSTimes…was “spot on”…in printing the correction(s) Letter To The Editor in this week …in the “Valentine Ode To Jerry And Esther”edition of 2/13/09…

The “REAL HERO”…Mark Mitchell sent the Editors a letter to set the record straight on some “factually inaccurate” items….in the BTSTimes 12/5/08 edition…

(Mark Mitchell was the gentleman that really did save the woman from drowning in the north end of town…and was recently awarded the LBTS Lifesaving Award…His coming forward in Jarvis Hall soon after the incident put the kabosh on the Vice Mayor’s VFD beach Incident Report taking credit…even after it was found the VFD report was also at odds with the BSO Incident Report …….previous posts scoops/VFD categories…)

1st -Major Mitchell wanted to let it be known he is not yet retired from the Air Force…having 6 more years in the Reserves to complete his 20 year career….

2nd-Major Mitchell said Chief Perkins  arrival (based on his (CP) own time estimates) 30 seconds after AMR- 2 minutes after the Vice Mayor- “about 1.5 minutes after the alarm would make the Major into someone with” running /swimming abilities into something world class.”…a point he said humbly was not so…

BC- this appearing right on the heels of other VFD response claims that are certainly suspect and embellished…..(previous 2/2/09 incident report….VFD category)…

3rd- Major Mitchell said Chief Perkins arrival on scene came once the victim was already on the stretcher and must be the reason  for the Chief to make an account that was inaccurate in his recounting the incident with the victims mask….

The Major went on to describe that both mask incidents he referred to at the Town Meeting occurred when the victim was initially placed on the stretcher prior to being moved to the ATV…

The Major implored that better training would have mitigated this” oxygen mishandling incident.”

4th- Major Mitchell said that AMR Brooke Liddle’s statement about oxygen was correct….when he demonstrated and said “the reservoir bag will not inflate unless oxygen is turned on and flowing”…However the Major went on to write…he observed the  2 AMR respondents from the the vantage point of the victim’s left shoulder and saw no bag inflated…which meant the bag was not inflated…the air was not turned on.

Last- Major Mitchell said he watched the AMR respondent located at the victim’s feet reach towards her midsection and turn the air supply to the on position after the AMR respondent near her head asked him if he turned the air on…The Major said the the same respondent at the victim’s feet was the one who initially secured the oxygen bottle between her ankles for transport. Furthermore the Major noticed that while the stretcher straps were being secured, the mask had been pulled off her face and the hose was severely kinked, thus the Major directed the AMR respondent at the victim’s feet to undo the straps which the respondent immediately did…fixing the “strap-entangled cord and re-seated the mask”…

BC- It says so much about Major Mitchell’s character that he was unwilling to let revisionist VFD history usurp his 1st hand account…and the facts…

Residents in the north end of Town…it is not too soon to implore the “Real Hero”residing in your end of town to consider a run for Commissioner…in 2010!

It is also time once again to call for a VFD Oversight Board…in light of the litany of incidents….stories…false information …and “incredible” response times we have been receiving….over the last 4 1/2 months…

VIGILANTE OR HERO?….It’s your choice…..

more to come………
