Here’s The Scoop #5…9/12/08 Commission Meeting….CHAMBER SHOWDOWN A DRAW…

CHANGED HIS TUNE ON THE CHAMBER………..

Chamber 1….McIntee….0….

The about face from McIntee and the surprising No Show of his pal MacMillan…seated in the back of the hall at the commission meeting……produced a win-win-win… for the Chamber….. who will retain their historic location…receive a cut in their Town stipend ….along with a $5000 dollar “donation” from the VFD for Christmas By The Sea!….

It must have felt like Christmas to the Chamber!…Just kidding….maybe just the day after…finding no coal in their stocking…

There must have been a lot going on behind the scenes over the long recess to make the Vice Mayor…returning to the dais… so agreeable…so Mac-unencumbered…… HMMM….

BCbythese…although it was quite odd……when McIntee “dealt his cards”…”cutting to the chase”…with the $27 thousand that had been agreed to with the Chamber President in their private meeting …and the $5000 dollar VFD “donation” to boot…pun intended…providing himself a big “pat on the back”….the response in the hall was not quite as he would expect…by quite a few!….

His Battalion Chief buried his face in his hands….looking like he had been “sucker-punched”…and a few rows in front…some of those who donated monies to the VFD were none too pleased!….

How are the finances at the VFD these days?….Pre- contract….it must be tough?….

Not to single out this type of “generosity”…many supporters of non- profit organizations…find it unseemly when those organizations divert the funds intended for their use…elsewhere….

The GRINCH in this exchange though…the Town Manager……who was taken aback with the $7-10 thousand being asked for to proceed with the Chamber Holiday event….

Is there a requirement for Town sponsored organizations to produce their need for all funds for the budget year?…was this asked for from the Chamber….to include more than their operating budget….or was there more miscommunication?….

This writer proposes using the Bel Air entry example used by the Vice Mayor…this night….to remedy the situation….

The somewhat “heated exchange” between Paul Novak and McIntee arose when Paul spoke of the $20 thousand going to the Bel Air Beautification Committee…as soon as they asked for it……

The Vice Mayor responded that it was money coming from the already budgeted entryway project….

In that vein….the 4th of July event cost…was approx. 90+ thousand…close to the previous year…

Throughout the planning of the event..the Town Manager often remarked we had the money for it…so plan to cut the event down by $10 thousand…and give the funds to this equally important Town event….a practice that should continue ….annually……

Then..the VFD should back off their “donation”….seeing that the Town stepped up to the plate….as they should….

more to come….
