Here’s The Scoop … Took A Weekend Trip To Springfield …

ABE LINCOLN …THE RODNEY DANGERFIELD OF ILLINOIS  IN 2010?…

Dear Readers … The 2010-11 LBTS Budget Meeting 6 pm Tues. July 27th 6 pm ….followed by the Reg Commission Meeting at 7 pm  and the 4 pm Shade Session that is supposed to meet at 4 pm Wed. July 28th followed by the  5:30 pm Coral Reef Workshop followed by the Reg. Commission Round Table in Jarvis Hall agendas with commentary posts are coming…at least that’s the plan tonight…

The BCbythesea hubby and I took a little weekend jaunt to  Springfield Ill…..a first visit for us both I’m somewhat ashamed to admit…since we both grew up here …

We stayed at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel build in the mid 80’s and currently undergoing renovations…

Those renovations are needed …but it was clean and comfortable and walking distance to most everything….

After a approx. 3 hour drive on Sat. morning we arrived …checked in and headed for lunch in the square and the old State Capital building …complete with a visit from young Abe himself…The volunteer told us he went home to eat with Mary… but we saw him prior at the restaurant we had lunch in….OOPS!…

Later on we headed in the heat to the new State Capital building…and a tour…after walking through the check in to check for firearms etc….

This place was incredible…absolutely gorgeous…the Senate/House Chambers were renovated 4 years ago and the renovations is still ongoing in the Governor’s Hall with a company named Evergreen that has done 38 other capital renovations…They are hand painting the walls and ceilings …opulence.. right after hearing Ill. may bear California in going bankrupt!… http://www.evergreene.com/ …Our tour guide also mentioned he has been doing his job for 12 years and is part-time as most are therefore they receive no benefits…Hmmm…. Government workers without benefits…Ahead of their time..The full-time employees pay a portion of their insurance etc…John Thompson brought that up 2 years ago for LBTS employees…

Sat. night we went on the Scandalous tour with a guide who wrote a book called Wicked Springfield, Erica Holst…
“Scandalous Springfield Walk: This adult only 90 minute walking tour chronicles Springfield’s true crime history. There’s stories of keystone cops & brothel raids, prohibition & speakeasies, lynchings & riots, the mob, murder, & swimming with the fishes in the Sangamon River, and Springfield’s connection to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Take the tour or else!! Must be 16 or older for this tour. RESERVATIONS NOT NEEDED.”

Sunday was a visit to the Lincoln Museum….

It included 2 great theater presentations one by AT&T …. and took a little over 3 hours to complete…The Lincoln Library was not open to tourists… Really worth the time…The theater productions approx. 10 min. each were first class as was the layout of the museum itself…Included were life size figures of Lincoln and his family as you entered…One highlight was a Korean family who spent quite a bit of time with the father …his camera and his wife and 3 small children trying to get a photo with all standing still ..next to the Lincolns… quite something to observe…as many did…

Onto Lincoln’s Tomb…

Again….opulent… Inside was  Lincoln…his wife and three of his four sons…Robert Todd is buried in Arlington National Cemetery at the request of his wife… (more about him below)…Hard to read the bronze tablets attached to the statues…but quite something to behold…

Headed for New Salem before heading home ….

This was Lincoln arrived on a flatboat and later returned…as a young man working as a surveyor …in a store and failed in business and love …before becoming a lawyer….

Alright now…the Rodney Dangerfield comparison…”no respect” comes from walking around and seeing where Lincoln worked and visited …signs indicating he was an party to an affair at one location…involved in altercations at another…He was friendly with infamous cannibals according to the tour guide…..and of course the many political cartoons up on the walls in the museum (and in a book at the gift shop) loaded with unflattering depictions of Abe and Mary along references to his proclamation being a sham…Winning the presidency because the Democrats split the vote…and using some fancy political strategy  in excluding the south from his campaigning ….with a the late Tim Russert reporting on it as if it were Bush-Gore….and so on and so forth…. He was said to have had marital problems coming to work in tears … his law partner states…He did not discipline his children reenacted in one room that has ink on the walls and the boys on the dining table while Lincoln reads the paper… His eldest son Robert had disdain for his father and after he died and his mother Mary was further depressed…he had her committed and burned all the letters between Abe and Mary… John Wilkes Booth’s brother also an actor actually saved one of Lincoln’s son’s life before the Ford Theater shooting…. and Lincoln’s nemesis Steven Douglas dated Mary before she married Abe….

Abe Lincoln…in 2010 …in Springfield Ill…..has definitely lost some respect…. while still providing quite a livelihood for the town…

more to come….
