THE MEANING OF “MAJOR DEFICIENCIES” ….IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER ….

Dear Readers …Diane Boutin from the Windjammer has been a frequent public speaker at meetings in Jarvis Hall whether MPSC or Commission meetings both the regular/Roundtable and special workshops…Ms. Boutin has often spoken about the lack of keeping the portals in the south end of Town leading to the beach up- to- snuff … A request was made at the last budget meeting and a report was made by Public Works  …The question now is what “major deficiencies” means and to whom…….It’s definitely in the eye of the beholder ….In the beginning of the report it states there are no “major deficiencies” and they are in “good shape”…but the list that follows of what needs to be addressed…sure does gives credence to Ms. Boutin’s ongoing concerns which were finally heard…Now the concerns and the list need to be acted upon to make sure those “major deficiencies” mean the same thing to those who maintain the portals as they do to those that promote them to visitors and use them as regularly as residents and taxpayers …

Re: Portal Status Report
On 08/17/2010 Mike Loden the Public Works Supervisor and I conducted an inspection of all the Town Portals and found them to be in good shape with no major deficiencies. The Portals receive a high volume of beach goers on a daily basis and are subjected to the harsh elements associated with a Beach Front Community. Commercial Pavilion is cleaned daily while the other Portals are cleaned on Monday; all Portals are pressure washed once a month.
Palm Ave.
• Wall and canopy will be painted
• New light covers for the wall lights will be ordered
• Landscaping will be cleaned up or added
• Tree grates need to be replaced in next budget year
Hibiscus
• Replace bollard covers
Datura
• Grout tile wall
• Order plastic bike rack (this year if possible)
• New Turtle friendly bollards next budget year
• The parking sign poles need to be painted

Commercial Blvd.
• Replace broken outlet covers
• Repair pylon
• Repair or remove detectables
• Painting is currently every six months (June and December)
• Replace plants in planter beds
El Prado
• Call Minto regarding metal roof warranty
Washingtonia and Pine Ave.
• Landscaping
The lettering on the entry signs to all the Portals are getting pitted and will need to be replaced with plastic to avoid future problems with corrosion. This will start in the next budget year.
