Here’s The Scoop … Odds & Ends .. Before The Meetings Begin Again … Mc-Shark House In Lauderdale-By-The-Sea / Handicapped Buoy On El Mar Drive/ Full Speed Ahead On Artificial Reef Project On One Side/ The Chamber Having Second Thoughts? …..

MC-SHARK HOUSE ….AN HOMAGE TO ITS FORMER INFAMOUS OWNER? …

A Reader sent this one in…and another verified it … Yep, it’s former VM -LBTS Dep. Chief McIntee’s home sold right before he hightailed it out of town to northern Florida… The shark…how apropos!…

………………

IS THE ORIGINAL ARTIFICIAL REEF BUOY HANDICAPPED? …

The Reader that sent in the “eyesore” as they titled the pic…stated it is sitting in the handicapped space…Hmmm…another case of “How apropos” for a BFF of the shark?…

BUOYS GOING ROGUE?….

Speaking of the Artificial Reef Project …the latest is Dr. Goreau has not been responding to -mails etc…from the Town Manager…Although he is in receipt of a breach of contract letter sent to him last week …per direction from a 3-2 (Clottey/Vincent voted no) vote of the Commission on Aug. 25th (prev. posts)… We hear also that the disconnect has grown stranger still… The Town Atty. and TM have decided to wait on a new contract to sit down with Goreau and iron it out together…Hmmm…not quite the direction I believe was directed by the Commission…and more so with the latest e-mails sent from “Goreau Associates” who are intent upon charging ahead no matter the holes still not plugged in the contract…permits and the buoys themselves… They sent the following e-mails …

BC- We understand VM Dodd is continuing to open try and open up communication among the entities before these “buoys” …the 2 new models not seen by the Commission/Town have “sailed!… The new “vessel owner” listed on the manifest…is yet another diving corp. in Pompano Beach according to a Google …Vone Research… http://voneresearch.org/?pageID=donate.html …. and again not mentioned in the present contract… The prior builder-owner (?) of the original buoy parked at the Furth motel on El Mar is said to be miffed at the sudden change and apparent non-use of his version …What happens now … is anyone’s guess when the vendor has gone rogue…and the the Commission is divided!… Anyone want to “handicap” the bets on this one?…

SECOND THOUGHTS ON THE FUTURE? ….

Is the Chamber having second thoughts on what role the Town will play in funding the future of it and the Welcome Center?… At the Aug. 25th meeting Chamber President Paul Novak was unusually terse with the Mayor and Commission and the Town’s offer …which was to aid in increasing the marketing of the Welcome Center-Chamber as well as increasing the over time the size and impact of both in association with any future development improvements in Town… The Chamber balked and wanted the money to employ another full-time employee for the Welcome Center…asking for monies only for the Welcome Center and not for the Chamber…Behind the scenes there was some differences of opinion were seen with the resignation of Yann Brandt from the Board after he delivered what he said he would in the vision for the future of the Chamber/Welcome Center in accordance with the majority of the Commission and the Administration…as well as a few previous Chamber Board members…

As the Commission awaits the Chambers numbers as requested at that meeting …online at the Chamber site was the following “Letter from the President”  in the Sept. Sea Breeze…

“Dear Officers, Directors, Members, Staff, Volunteers and Friends,
Summer is over! But from all indications most of our hoteliers, business members and professionals all held their
own in spite of this down economy. We did have some businesses move out of town and we do have some
vacant storefronts but the Town still remains a “destination” for both out of town tourists and from across the
bridge “locals”. Our next biggest threat will be the hurricane season which we are now in the middle of. Let’s
all keep our fingers crossed.
The next few months should be fix-up time for the hoteliers, new window displays and stock for the business
people, menu changes for the restaurants and the rest of us doing the miscellaneous things that have to be
done before the season. Remember that competition is always at its best in a down economy so make sure
you do the right things and stay in the race. In other words – let’s make this town shine! DON’T WAIT –
START NOW!
The Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center and the Town are still in negotiations in trying to finalize a
contract for funding for the year 2011. The new administration seems to be willing to work with us but a few
points of difference remain concerning the Welcome Center. Talk of a new vision for the Chamber of Commerce
abounds and we are very willing and open for discussion on this matter. Our marketplace is constantly
changing-paradigms are shifting-economic conditions are dynamic with new demands-which create new
expectations for proactive and responsive leadership by The Chamber and our members.
The following board members-Todd Greeninger, Kurt Aron and Yann Brandt have all resigned from the Board for
various personal and business reasons. I would like to thank them all for services rendered. They all
contributed during their tenure and did a superb job.
In replacement the Board has approved Shevaun Steward-Kuhn and Mark Silver as directors to fill out their
terms. Shevaun lives in town, is very active in the real estate business, was a former member of the Master
Plan Steering Committee and is very interested in the growth of this town. Mark Silver is a new-comer to
L.B.T.S. but has already established his own business called Argenti Designer Jewelers on Commercial Blvd. and
has already been very helpful and active to our Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center. I welcome them both
and consider them great additions to our Board.
Coming Up:
1. Our annual Fish Fry will be held in Jarvis Hall on October 6th
2. Our Fall Craft Show will be held on October 30th & 31st
3. Christmas By The Sea will be held on December 8th
* Please put these in your date books. They all will be fun filled events.
Reminder: The first Saturday of every month is our “Beach Cleanup” gathering. Just show up at the Pavilion at
9AM. We will supply you with latex gloves and plastic bags to carry out this worthwhile effort. Bring a friend,
clean the beach and you will feel great after you are done.
Remember, everyone is welcome to stop by the Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center either to say hello or
to have our staff help you in any way. Our aim is to keep The Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center vibrant,
non-political and successful.
Respectfully yours,
Paul Novak,
On behalf of the Officers, Directors, Members, Staff and Volunteers”

The 3rd paragraph…”The Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center and the Town are still in negotiations in trying to finalize a
contract for funding for the year 2011. The new administration seems to be willing to work with us but a few
points of difference remain concerning the Welcome Center. Talk of a new vision for the Chamber of Commerce

changing-paradigms are shifting-economic conditions are dynamic with new demands-which create new
expectations for proactive and responsive leadership by The Chamber and our members.” … certainly sounds more in line with the Yann Brandt (see his acknowledged resignation in the para. that followed)… plan brought to the Chamber but not accepted by the Executive Board…as we saw in the Aug. 25th exchange…This should be the case, especially when you factor in the rest of Mr. Novak’s message concerning the current state of business in LBTS….

It is this writer’s hope the message in the Sea Breeze usurps the message at the podium last month and the Commission-Chamber will now be in sync to move ahead side-by-side as the vision for this Town is implemented over the next year…
