Here’s The Scoop

Gas terminal risks are called minimal…David Fleshler

BCbythesea…did a little straightening up today….

and low and behold…the very article … previous post…about the gas port… make that ports.. there are 2…

it was on the front page of the Sun-Sentinel local section….Nov.7, 2007…

along with the article…a diagram…and the public meeting Nov.28,2008….for people to learn more and make comments ..it was from 5-8:30pm…at the Courtyard by Marriott…2440 W. Cypress Creek Rd. Fort Lauderdale…

No one was paying attention…due to the Jan. elections…..

The article begins with a preliminary review by the Coast Guard saying the gas port would pose little risk to public safety or the environment…though if a spill did occur it could cause a HORRIFIC FIRE…

on the diagram is shown twin circles around the proposed twin terminals…..one for a pool of ignited fuel…dangers range from immediate death closest to source at a half a mile away from the ports…to second -degree burns…1.6 miles from the ports

a second larger circle for flammable vapor cloud area…the distance a flash fire could ignite…example given…what happens when you light a gas grill…

NOTE: this is the issue of greatest concern to Candidate Chris Chiari and others…for the distance it could really travel in high winds….

BCbythesea…the diagram shows the circle for the vapor cloud looking very close… 3.7 miles from the ports with a 6 mile buffer from the shore…

so there is definitely a valid concern there for an abundance of caution…pertaining to the high winds that are so prevalent along the coastline….

also…just as Miami just shut down their infamous…million dollar balloon ride attraction….due to not taking into account the winds…. this was not something flammable ….just a ridiculous business venture… previous post…

the article continued on with explanations of what it would accomplish…

getting natural gas delivered from tankers,,,,carrying it in a cooled liquid form…they would moor at the underwater terminals…heat their cargo back to gaseous state…shoot it through the pipeline to provide fuel for South Florida power plants…

calming the fears of environmentalists …worried about the marine life…ocean floor..by using a network of buoys, anchors, turrets and pipes that would be built …to avoid such damage…

during construction 11 square miles of ocean would be off-limits to boats…with restrictions remaining within 2.9 square miles after terminals go into operation….

They go onto add there has never been aa accident resulting in the breach of the tanks of liquefied natural gas ship..

Dan McGinnis …Project Manager (as stated in article…presently referred to as V.P.) said the company spent a lot of time and money on biological studies, sonar surveys of the ocean’s bottom and other areas to minimize the project’s environmental impact….

The project needs the approval of the Federal Maritime Administration….and though it would be in federal waters…

the U.S. law allows the governor of the nearest state to veto the project…

BCbythesea….The vaporized gas range is a major impact concern that must be re-tested and re-evaluated before a final location is chosen ….

Gov. Crist is much more environmentally inclined than his predecessor….who put this project on hold in 2004…previous post….

along with being up for the Vice President spot and being chums with John McCain….it’s a good bet … if he does not place a second hold on the project…… a veto ….before the November election will be forthcoming….

although the article ends with the Suez hope…at the time…to start construction in May…OOPS!
