$1 principal not a pricey double dipper…Fred Grimm…5/8/08….

This column will be only one of many as we face tough times of retirees….who cannot make ends meet with the retirement funds they have….  that were depleted from the bad investment fallout…through no fault of their own…. the funds they will require to live ..if they are lucky to live long…and those that decide retirement…is just not for them….

This article zones in on “double dipping” and what it entails…financially …to the state…and the people benefiting……some changes might need to be addressed to ease the burden on one end… without imposing more burden on the other…….ie…judges…. the 30 day rule…(see article for details…)

That being said…. add into the mix….younger workers with either no real work ethic…or no desire to start working…(previous post…about ‘wandering into adulthood’…. Google the phrasing for a real eye opener….)….

Finding that “gray” area…pun intended…. where you still have productivity…and are not undermining the livelihood of those few and far between …. who do fulfill the old standard of age appropriate careers….

Past post covered the concern of Physicians ready to lessen their workload ….only to discover those coming to replace them have a very different set of priorities…putting their private life over the professional path they trained for….now the pre-retirees…are on the ropes…saying one foot out the door may not be in the cards…

they are not alone….

Case in point…examples….

2 BCbythesea experiences …recently….

CVS pharmacy…physician called into wrong CVS …the employee behind the counter for prescriptions…was bewildered and befuddled…no thought processing…no problem solving… just dealing with this situation … what it is…it is……..tough luck…end of conversation….

Enter the retiree aged employee…filling in …from another CVS store…who fortunately overheard the exchange…stepped up to the plate…and took the correct steps to track down the mistake… and find a result that was of benefit to the customer…and the store…

When thanked profusely…he just shrugged… and said “it was all in a day’s work”…no extra salutations were required….and he genuinely meant it….

Did his young sidekick…take notice?…Did he see an example to emulate?….Wish it were so…unfortunately…he stood…he shuffled and waited quite impatiently…to finish the transaction….as he was headed out on his break…. held up by the extra time involved….not happy….

Second…a broken fixture…part of a group…hot on the trail to replace…store …after store….no such luck…”look up”…said the young clerk……”not here”…said another at the next stop……”don’t make it anymore”…… get the jest?…

last stop…a new store…with retirement age “old guys”….happy to search…smitten with the prospect…happy to be on the hunt…not ready to give up…

The hunt is in process…with calls and updates…not giving up….this kind of attention….one can get quite used too…

Look all around you…in the restaurants…the servers…gray….the hosts…gray….

it’s gray and it’s growing….

gray matters……
