Agenda 4/8/08 … New Business Item 14d. What are they thinking?

Item 14d. Discussion and / or action to allow elected officials and its employees to opt out of the Town’s health insurance plan and, in lieu thereof, receive compensation in the amount of the unused premium (Manager Colon)

I cannot believe it! …… What are they thinking?…….

First it was cell phones…

Next it was insurance…

the Vice Mayor asked at the end of that meeting …. what would they receive if they did not take the insurance…. (paraphrasing)

Low and behold a month later…it is on the agenda …courtesy of the Town Manager.

It just looks bad!

(let me just say…I have nothing against the Town Manager…this is certainly not personal …it is a matter of principal…that would apply to any Manager or Commissioner…. introducing this item at this time….)

case in point…..scenario…..

Imagine it was year ago or so…..

the Old Guard Majority Commission is on the dais….. they vote for insurance for themselves…. it passes….

Mayor Parker says when it is over…he does not need the insurance…he gets it through his Hillsboro Inlet appointment…. but he asks if he would be compensated instead………

The next month the former Town Manager puts item 14 d. on the agenda….

the response….

the current incumbents would be all over it….

the Times would have it on the cover of their next edition….with an immediate newsflash on the internet!

Tone deaf….is what I see so far….sad to say…. with the incumbents….

(guess I will be sitting on the aisle next Tuesday for this one….so be it…..)

My neighbors voted for a change with their pocketbooks….

for fiscal responsibility…..frugal government…..

they believed this commission would act just like their constituents need to act in these tough times of increased surcharges on their household bills…

they are tightening their own budgets due to fixed incomes and the ever rising cost of living….

what have they seen so far….. is not what they voted for…and they are telling me so….

Yes, the commission can say they are saving us 3 million on EMS….but the onus is still on the full commission to act as they said they would during the campaign….

I implore the commission to start now…do not pass this item!

Residents should contact all of the Commissioners with their concerns….

the full agenda with comments will be forthcoming ….
