Here’s The Scoop..Mc-Furth Fireworks On The Beach…UP IN THE AIR? …

June 3, 2009 by Barbara

NOT QUITE PICTURE PERFECT?….

BC- Looks like 4th of July Coordinator Marc Furth owes the Mayor and Comm. Dodd  a big apology for his accusations…as the Mc-Furth Gang selfishly go against the wishes of the Fish and Wildlife experts and the County……Pretty funny move for the group behind the coral reef project!…A sign of the VFD/CIC 4th of July they have in store?….HMMM….Will the Town need to speak to the Pier Owners about that 2-day event after all…(an olive branch sounds about right…right now)….or as we previously posted…will we be left with the Mc-Furth VFD/CIC  “2-HATS BROOM BOYS ” Re-election kick off parade and party only?…YUCK!…

Excerpts…

‘In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, officials looking for savings decided to move their show to the sand from a more expensive barge or pier as in past years. Town spokesman Steve d’Oliveira said if the permit application is not approved, town commissioners must decide if they want to find another location or return to the barge or pier.’
‘The Coast Guard, which regulates offshore activities, is deliberating issuing permits for the festivities and wanted the county’s feedback, said Lou Fisher, of Broward’s environmental protection department.

The county sent similar letters to state regulators about Lauderdale-by-the-Sea’s plan to shoot off fireworks from the sand. That city is also awaiting permits from the county and state.’

Here’s The Scoop…Day 2 News Coverage……When The 2 Became 1….

May 18, 2009 by Barbara

WELL, THIS ONE SAYS IT ALL…THE “2-HATS BROOM BOYS” BECAME ….DEPUTY CHIEF “JIM MCINTEE”…OOPS!…

BC- A resident speaking up recently on the subject of “Broom Boys” McIntee/Silverstone said…”We swept them in and we can sweep them away!”…OUCH!…

Excerpts from today’s Herald…

‘The pair spent Sunday afternoon in the surf off Lauderdale-by-the-Sea when, suddenly, they were caught in a rip current, said Deputy Chief Jim McIntee of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea’s volunteer fire department.

Firefighters already were in the area, in the 4300 block of Ocean Drive, because of a previous call for help shortly before 1 p.m.

As McIntee helped the first person to an ambulance, he turned to his right, saw the couple and then, ”the rip tide grabs both of them and away they go,” McIntee said.

Firefighters rushed back into the water. One grabbed Spencer and carried him to shore, McIntee said, where he was met by more firefighters. Meanwhile, another firefighter grabbed Kristensen, who also was carried back to land with the help of firefighters.

”It’s a blessing we were there,” McIntee said.’

Here’s The Scoop…We Made The News…VFD On Channel 10 & 6 At 11 PM…UPDATED…We Made The Papers…Another Rorshach Test?…

May 17, 2009 by Barbara

LIGHTS…CAMERA….ACTION…THE RESCUES…BY THE LBTS-VFD AND GOOD SAMARITANS…

Dear Readers…It was quite a day yesterday in LBTS… a look outside this writer’s window in the morning…showed a sea wrought with whitecaps….A troublesome sight to behold as we watched all the swimmers going in despite the treachery that awaited them….

As previously posted we saw that evening the familiar white T.V. Camera trucks from Channel 10 and Channel 6 news…

Below…the text from both interview with links to the sites which may have the videos on soon…

CHANNEL 10 NEWS…. 5/17/09…. 11 PM

Channel 10 news showed in their opening the photo of LBTS-VFD Capt. Ron McGirr and an unidentified FF on the LBTS-VFD Sea Doo…as the Anchor Charles Perez said ” Rescue at sea caught on camera after a day of rough surf”…

At 11:07 pm…Charles Perez said ” High winds made for rough conditions on the beach today where several people had to be rescued after nearly drowning within hours of each other.. Julie Sommers (standing in front of the newly installed post #7) joins us now live from the beach in Lauderdale- By- The- Sea with the pictures of quite a dramatic rescue,Julie”…

Julie Sommers said ” Good evening to you Charles. This lifer preserver post here behind me is one of several installed just three days ago and already today proved priceless. Because on this stretch of sand alone five people who would have drowned this afternoon were saved.’

BC- Next was the interview with the young men previously posted across from the LBTS fire station around 8 pm….

Julie Sommers-” As the sun set this evening surfers strapped in their boards and described the thrills of a rough day on the water can bring”

The young man responded -” It was pretty fun”

Julie Sommers- ” Fun for you guys though can be dangerous for swimmers who aren’t strong enough for rip tide.”

Young surfer- ” I actually warned a couple people today about the rip current.”

Julie Sommers-” You were warning some of the swimmers out there?”

Young surfer-” Yeah, some of the kids, so yeah they didn’t really know what they were doing.”

Julie Sommers- ” It was not just kids that needed rescuing. These photos capture some of the terrifying moments when two tourists from Holland (Photo shown of FF Mark Conn) were rescued this afternoon by volunteer firefighters who patrol the sand here .” ( Photo of Dep. Chief McIntee/ Cat. Ron McGirr and 5 FF by life ring)…

Julie Sommers-” Because the city cannot afford lifeguards.”

BC- Looks like the Dep. Chief came back to the station this evening for an interview…

Dep. Chief/VM McIntee- ” The rips, I watched them take them like a rubber duck in the river, right out and my eyes just popped out. I watched it.”

Julie Sommers- ” And then he and others raced into the water as couples screamed for help and yes that gash on his cheek is from the rescue effort, a rogue wave he said that slammed into the rescue board. A minoe injury worth the bigger pictur.” ( Videos shown by ATV with closeup of McIntee’s cheek )

Dep. Chief McIntee- ” If the volunteer fire department wasn’t there as fast as we were those people wouldn’t be going back to Holland in a plane, they’d be going back in a box.”

Julie Sommers- ” Just before that couple was saved firefighters pulled another woman to safety and moments after the rescue to the north good Samaritans pulled two other people to safety.” ( She held up the life ring that says “property of LBTS”) ” And Charles in that case they (the good Samaritans) used these life rings that had just been posted here on the beach.”

Charles Perez- ” Very lucky to have the right people there at the right time.”..

http://www.justnews.com/video/index.html

CHANNEL 6 NEWs……5/17/09…. 11 PM…

11:05 PM…

BC- Channel 6 showed the same photo of Capt. Ron McGirr on the Sea Doo

Anchor- ” Dangerous rip current threatened the lives of several beachgoers across the south Florida coast today including a group of five in Lauderdale- By- The- Sea. Thanks to some quick thinking by volunteer first responders they all survived.”

Reporter- (on the LBTS beach in front of a group of warning signs) ” This is an unsupervised beach area so you are really swimming at your own risk and that’s exactly what these swimmers were doing and five nearly drowned.”

Vice Mayor/Deputy Chief McInteee- (on the beach in the afternoon) ” As we walked towards the beach approximately 20 feet from the beach we observed two people to our right on the ocean side hit the water and the riptide just picked them up and took them right out like a rocket. They started screaming for help.”

Reporter- ” There are no lifeguards here at Lauderdale By The Sea beaches, but the volunteer fire department happened to be nearby, they were nearby at another emergency”

BC- A photo was shown in the Minto sales office beachfront parking lot of VFD photog Marc Furth, Dep Chief McIntee, FF Mark Conn, Capt. Ron McGirr and an a VFD- FF…and a photo of McIntee and VFD-FF’s with the 2 ATVs and AMR )

Reporter- ” The volunteer first responders on jet skis were able to reach these two swimmers in time.”

Dep Chief McIntee- ” The bottom line is if the volunteers were not there those people would not be going home in chairs, they’d be going home in boxes.”

Reporter- ” The two people rescued are tourists from Holland spending the weekend in South Florida. The rescue was captured by the department’s photographer.”

VFD- Photog Marc Furth- ( Video with McIntee) ” I shoot pictures for the volunteer fire department and they use those for training purposes. I was able to be there in the very beginning to the very end of this.”

Reporter- ( as pictures of a rescue boat was shown) The other three swimmers who had close calls on Sunday were rescued by other beachgoers. Now officials are putting out these life preservers all over on this stretch of beach just in case anyone needs a rescue.”

BC- While we are all thankful that all those swimmers were saved today, a closer look at these reports shows that the VFD  were on patrol yesterday and were able to save some of the swimmers…but the others were saved by “good Samaritans”…and the report from Channel 10 stating …” Because the city cannot afford lifeguards.” along with Channel 6 reporting….” This is an unsupervised beach area so you are really swimming at your own risk and that’s exactly what these swimmers were doing and five nearly drowned.”…and…”The other three swimmers who had close calls on Sunday were rescued by other beachgoers. Now officials are putting out these life preservers all over on this stretch of beach just in case anyone needs a rescue.”…should make it time to put the Clottey recommended referendum item for LBTS lifeguards on the March 2010 ballot!…After all…today is Monday…when the VFD does not patrol as often as on the weekend…and we also face the Memorial Day weekend…and much larger crowds of swimmers…

UPDATE…In today’s Sentinel Local section…including a photo of LBTS-VFD Capt. Jud Hopping making a  rescue… by ‘ Marc Furth,correspondent’ ( Really? McIntee BFF-BTSTimes Editor/Owner-Town photog-VFD photog- 4th of July Event coordinator…now he’s called a correspondent? )….with the accompanying text…

‘Firefighters make Rescue’ ‘ SAFE RETURN: Capt. Jud Hopping, left of the Lauderdale-By-The- Sea Volunteer Fire Department, works to bring Tine Kristensen back to shore after a  rip current dragged her and Brian Spencer out to sea. Hopping and another firefighter who were on the beach near the 4300 block of El Mar Drive, rushed on a water scooter to save the pair. They were assisted by four other firefighters. The victims whose hometowns and ages were not available, did not need medical attention. “These people would be deader than a doornail if we weren’t there,” said spokesman Deputy Fire Chief Jerry McIntee, who is the vice mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.’

BC- Again, it is time for some serious discussion about how this town is portrayed…our P.R….perhaps Comm. Clottey was correct after all concerning  Town PIO d’Oliveira being ready in such circumstances…A look at the comments made by VM/Dep. Chief  and now (according the the Sentinel) VFD Spokesman McIntee in the last 24 hours…should give rise for great concern to the Town, VFD and for businesses that rely on tourism ….On the one hand we cannot be talking about charging $400-500 a night to become a “resort destination” ( VM McIntee/ Cristie Furth previous 5/13/09 meeting LBTS agenda/meetings cat.)…and then have comments made such as these by McIntee about our beach and what awaits the travelers!…

Here’s The Scoop…5 Near Drownings…VFD Rescues On Sea Doos/ Life Rings…Channel 6 & Channel 10 News At 11 PM…

May 17, 2009 by Barbara

RIP CURRENTS CALLS WERE RAMPANT!…

Alert the media…

We hear the VFD…AMR …BSO were mighty busy today…

5 near drownings off our beach…with the VFD using their Sea Doos and the newly installed life rings…

Seems someone wanted that news to be known…and alerted the media…

This writer first heard the news of 2 near drowning calls…including 1 call coming from the Windjammer around 1 pm….

On channel 6 news at 6 pm…. the report was 5 near drownings in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea….No interviews…

The BCbythesea- hubby and I ate dinner at Village Grille (Sunday Blue Plate Special pot roast)…as we watched a channel 6 camera van turn around in front of the beach pavilion….After as we made our way home…we saw two  channel 10 camera vans…coming down Commercial Blvd…and turning onto Bougainvilla…and stopping in front of  the LBTS fire station…around 8 pm….They parked in front of the firehouse…the empty …closed down firehouse…with no firemen to be found!…

We inquired if they were there for the near drownings…they said “yes”…One cameraman said “Someone called the news desk…and told them of the VFD saving 2 people using their jet ski and new life rings.”…He went on to say “Guess they wanted to get the word out on what they did.”…We answered ‘Guess so!”…BUT…Where were they ( VFD)?…

We were told by the cameraman…when we asked if it would be on the 11 pm news…”Unless the earth opens up!”…

As we spoke to him a reporter was across the street interviewing and videoing two young surfers in front of their car…and then they proceeded to go back across the road to take video of the 3rd and 4th firetrucks…parked along side the closed up station as the darkness of the hour came upon them…..

Let’s hope that either they have earlier video to use of the VFD and other LBTS safety providers…or somehow…some way…the VFD came to the station after we left…

Make sure to see…on channel 6 and channel 10 at 11 pm tonight!…

Here’s The Scoop…Who Did What …And When…At The Hyperbaric Explosion…..LBTS-VFD Makes Some “Noise”…

May 8, 2009 by Barbara

MAY 1, 2009….

Last week Readers will recall we had a tragedy occur at the Ocean Hyperbaric Center in the south end of town…( previous scoops posts)…It resulted in instant “Hero” status for the brave actions of BSO Deputy John Melbourne…with newspaper articles, local newscast stories, along with BSO press releases and culminated in the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an Officer being awarded to Deputy Melbourne last Wednesday May 6th in a ceremony.

As previously posted there was major grumbling in the background of the VFD and AMR being left out of the media attention and BSO press releases…

Well the VFD and the Town went into overdrive on that very day…sending out a letter from LBTS-VFD Chief Perkins to BSO Sheriff Lamberti and 2 press releases……

Here they are…..

(1)…Letter To BSO Sheriff Lamberti…

May 6, 2009

‘Dear Sheriff Lamberti,

Attached you will find the press release prepared by our department regarding the recent incident at the Hyperbaric Chamber in our town on May1, 2009. I can sadly say many members of my Department were very disappointed and depressed at the way the Public Information Officer of your department treated our members and the members of the AMR ambulance division in our town.

In the release made by your department and various public statements to the local TV news media, not once were we mentioned as even being present at this tragic event. When you read our VFD press release you will clearly see that we certainly were present and did all that was in our power to help these poor people who were so tragically injured.

We, at the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Volunteer Fire Department hope in the future you will be more considerate in your press releases regarding events we participate in with your department in providing public safety to our community.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely Chief Robert Perkins’

(2)…The LBTS-VFD Press Release …

‘On the 1st of May 2009, at approximately 11:29 AM, the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an EXPLOSION at 4001 North Ocean Drive in our town.

Chief Robert Perkins was the first fire officer on the scene and reported on location at 11:29:28 AM; just 1 minute and 55 seconds after the call was transmitted. Chief Perkins upon arrival was confronted with a three story commercial building with fire alarms sounding and smoke showing. The building at this stage was evacuated by the occupant, about 30-40 people. Chief Perkins immediately went into the structure located that alarm panel and determined where the alarm was activated from. This panel indicated the alarm was coming from one of the hyperbaric chambers. As Chief Perkins went into the Chamber room, he was met with heavy white smoke. Also in the room was a Sheriff’s Deputy who had a mask on. This Deputy indicated to Chief Perkins that we may have two victims inside one of the observed chambers. The Chief and Deputy Sheriff walked over to the suspect chamber, opened the chamber and observed two bodies, a young male and a middle aged female: both victims had extensive charring and burn injuries. At this point, the Chief alerted the Deputy Sheriff that he had to secure the building for immediate safety reasons. The Chief directed Inspector Paine of the VFD to turn off the oxygen, the power to the building and then the Chief gave orders to the incoming firemen and AMR ambulance personnel to begin the rescue work. One of the orders was to relocate the ambulance to the front of the building for easy regress of the victims. The Chief then returned to to the Deputy Sheriff who was standing by the occupied chamber, total time lapsed, was 1-1 1/2 minutes between initially opening the occupied chamber and his return.

Chief Perkins went back and met with the Deputy Sheriff to explain to the Deputy how they werre going to remove the victims. The Chief stated that he wanted to pick the child up first and the Deputy assisted in this action. The Chief then picked up the child and handed him the victim to the Deputy and told him to go outside the front door AMR would be located there. The Deputy Sheriff then went outside with the young child. The Chief then began to lift the female victim out of the chamber. At this time, Firefighter Silverstone and Chavez came to the Chief’s aid. The female victim was carried out with Chief Perkins holding the legs and FF Silverstone and Chavez carrying the upper body of the victim. The three fighters working together carried the woman victim outside to a waiting AMR backboard and placed the victim on this medical device where a team of AMR Paramedics and EMT’s feverishly worked to save the victims. It should be noted, that the tremendous work of AMR EMS personnel who were lead by Chief Medic Donald Anderson, Gus Herrera, Kevin Padden, Arthur Moen, Robbie Salvina, Paulette Archer and Paul Chevannes kept the horrible injured victims alive and prepared them for transport. The young boy was helicopter transported to the hospital and the woman was ground transported to the hospital. The Deputy Sheriff who entered the building with the borrowed mask should also be commended for his brave actions.

This was the perfect example of the whole public safety apparatus in town working together for the greater good of the community.

We are sad to report that the female has succumbed to her injuries and the young boy remains in critical condition.

Chief Robert Perkins’

LBTS FIREFIGHTERS AND PARAMEDICS PLAYED VITAL ROLE IN EXTRICATING VICTIMS….

Lauderdale-By- The- Sea volunteer firefighters and paramedics played a vital role in extricating the two victims of Friday’s tragic hyperbaric chamber explosion.

The incident occurred May 1 at 11:29 AM at 4001 N. Ocean Drive, a three-story structure that houses the first-floor Ocean Hypebaric Oxygen Neurologic Center.

One of the victims, Vincenza Pesce, 62, of Italy, later died. Her grandson, Francesco Pio Martinisi,4, also of Italy, suffered burns over much of his body. The boy, who was receiving medical treatment, was in the chamber with his grandmother when a blast caused a flash fire inside the pressurized chamber.

The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation.

Shortly after the fire alarm in the building went off, the Lauderdale-By- The- Sea Volunteer Fire Department, Broward Sheriff’s Office and paramedics with American Medical Repsonse responded to the scene at the south end of Town.

When VFD Chief Robert Perkins entered the building, which was filled with heavy white smoke, he encountered Broward Sheriff’s Officer John Melbourne, who entered the building wearing a mask shortly before Perkins went inside. Melbourne told Perkins he thought there were two victims inside a chamber.

Perkins and Melbourne opened the chamber and found the burned bodies of the young boy and his grandmother. After Perkins ordered another firefighter to turn off the power and oxygen to the building, he lifted up the child and handed him to Melbourne., who exited through the front door and handed him to paramedics.

Perkins then lifted up the woman with assistance from firefighters Jim Silverstone and Daniel Chavez. The three carried the woman out of the building and handed her to paramedics, who then rushed the grandmother to a nearby hospital. The boy was transported by helicopter to medical facilities for treatment of his burns.

Perkins today (05-06-09) praised Silverstone, Chavez, Melbourne and AMR paramedics who responded;  Chief Medic Donald Anderson, Gus Herrera, Kevin Padden, Arthur Moen, Robbie Salvina, Paulette Archer and Paul Chevanne.

“This was the perfect example of the whole public safety apparatus in town working together for the greater good of the community,” Perkins said.

BSO honored Melbourne today for his role after  responding to the scene.

“The Volunteer Fire Department and BSO deputies performed professionally and were of great assistance to AMR crews,” said Brook Liddle, Chief  of Operations for AMR in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.’

Below …. is what the Sentinel included from the press releases……on May 7,2009

(4)….’Meanwhile, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief Robert Perkins and two other volunteer firefighters, Jim Silverstone and Daniel Chavez, removed the grandmother from the chamber, Perkins said in a press release Wednesday.

Perkins described Friday’s rescue efforts, which involved multiple departments, as “the perfect example” of emergency personnel working as team for “the greater good of the community.”‘

Here’s The Scoop…Recognizing A Brave Act…LBTS P.R. To Set The Record Straight…

May 7, 2009 by Barbara

THE FACE OF A HERO….

BC- Lots of “grumbling”…still going around town…with the LBTS-VFD feeling left out of the limelight of accolades…some even playing a ” the emperor’s wearing no clothes” by insisting it was the LBTS-VFD Chief who carried out the little boy…All on scene…including VFD know that ain’t so…The BSO did what they were supposed to…. spoke  to the press about their own…and gave the facts…BSO has the  P.R. media “drill” down to a science… …and followed through…from the moment the incident happened…culminating in the well deserved  honor bestowed upon BSO Deputy Melbourne honored along with other BSO  honorees yesterday…

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea…has had an ongoing problem with P.R. …whether getting events in the news…or prodcuing timely accurate incident reports from the LBTS-VFD…as have so often been previously posted on this site…….In fact on next Tuesday’s 5/12/09 LBTS agenda Comm. Clottey has put on an item to address the media by the Public Information Officer after a crisis…(we surmise this was not her own idea)…But the Comm. should have spoken with the town  PIO…to find out what is already in place…Our PIO Steve d’Oliveira is a seasoned professional in this area…But this writer also surmises from the bumbling done regularly from the Town  and the VFD…he can’t  possibly do the same job as BSO…with the press if he is not given the information to get out in the first place…on time …concise…and accurate…..

In the Sentinel the Chief of the VFD finally says …what the BSO told this writer and and was previously posted (scoops cat.)…that he and 2 other members ( Comm. /FF Silverstone and FF Chavez) carried out the grandmother…Also a heroic act that I am sure will be front and center in acknowledging next Tuesday night at the Regular Commission meeting…

Again, Congratulations to all the brave men and women who came to do their jobs that day…

Excerpts…

‘FORT LAUDERDALE – A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy on Wednesday received the agency’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor, for helping save a 4-year-old boy from a fiery explosion last week at a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea clinic.

Deputy John Melbourne received a standing ovation from more than 400 Sheriff’s Office employees and other people at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater in Fort Lauderdale.

Responding to an emergency call Friday, Melbourne arrived at the center, rushed to the burning chamber, grabbed the boy and took him outside the building.

Meanwhile, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief Robert Perkins and two other volunteer firefighters, Jim Silverstone and Daniel Chavez, removed the grandmother from the chamber, Perkins said in a press release Wednesday.

Perkins described Friday’s rescue efforts, which involved multiple departments, as “the perfect example” of emergency personnel working as team for “the greater good of the community.”‘

Here’s The Scoop…Yes Virginia, There Are Commissioners For Businesses…

May 5, 2009 by Barbara

WELL AT LEAST FORT LAUDERDALE “GETS IT”!….

BC- One day after Aruba Beach Cafe’ announced the cancellation of their 2009 Memorial Day Beach Bash…outside on the beach…citing the looming ordinances that appear to be a “done deal”…with …decibel meter reading code enforcers…..”stipends”….to be put in “lock boxes ” (lock boxes?…was the Vice Mayor channeling Al Gore?)…head counts citing any number over the special permit application….and any other way found to stick it to our businesses…Fort Lauderdale wants to “loosen” their open container laws…to help the businesses in these difficult economic times…WOW!…

HMMM…Comm. Dodd proposed the “entertainment district” not too long ago… …which was shot down….by you know who…And just last month Comm. Clottey complained that the BSO  needed to further enforce the open container law in our town….ARGHHHH….

May we suggest Commissioners……Forget the May 15th  & 16th “field trip” for decibel meter readings in downtown LBTS…and take it down the road to Fort Lauderdale…Make sure to ask their Commission to join you…3 Commissioners might actually wise up and “get it”…and we can stop the “containment” of business  in LBTS…

Excerpts…

‘Lauderdale mayor ready to loosen open container laws

Get ready to say, “It’s party time!”

Fort Lauderdale’s mayor says he wants to loosen the city’s strict ban on carrying open
containers of alcohol around at the beach for four major events that are on the calendar.

Mayor Jack Seiler said at a recent meeting that the law has “addressed what it needed to address.”

“We have got the boat show, the world’s largest; followed by the Orange Bowl, followed by the Pro Bowl, followed by the Super Bowl. Four major events, none of which [are] during Spring Break, that I would like to see us looking at relaxing the open container law.”

He said he doesn’t want visitors to have to worry about walking from the Ritz Carlton to another hotel with a beer in hand.

“We are entertaining the world,” he said, “with four world-class events.”

Seiler asked city staff and the city attorney’s office to look into loosening or suspending the public drinking laws, possibly just during the four time frames and not during Spring Break.

Former police chief/now Vice Mayor Bruce Roberts agreed, saying “I think the times change, and it’s important for economic development.”

Update…LBTS…Goes That Extra Mile…

May 5, 2009 by Barbara

LBTS- CODE  COMPLIANCE DID THEIR HOMEWORK….

Readers may recall a post about the recent Sentinel news story dealing with towns stuck with maintaining foreclosed properties which meant they were paid for by the taxpayers…The article revealed that LBTS had a dozen such properties…but our Town was able to have the banks pay to maintain them…..Quite a fete  and a savings for our residents…This writer contacted the Town to give them a big thumbs up for a job well done…and asked how they accomplished what the other towns did not…

Today I heard back…Our Development Department took the time to research the mortgages…thus finding the banks that were attached to these properties and made contact and arrangements for them to pay for the upkeep of the property…as they should…

I am told in other towns the code enforcement officers go by the properties in question…slap them with a “red tag” and move on…The scenario offered was that the banks attached to the properties are most likely to be out of state leaving the situation to further deteriorate and making it necessary for the towns to take on resolving the problem…

In the past we had approximately twelve… as stated above and in the article…There were four others that we maintained while going through the lien process…and as of today…all have been settled and we as a town have no properties requiring town services to maintain them…

Nice to know…

BC- Many local residents were asking yesterday about the building …All having concerns about the upkeep since the death of the Dr.Neubauer…Adding to that dialog was a resident who said his father was told to go to Imperial Point for more up to date equipment…Investigations are ongoing…with news yesterday of the 1500 lb. tank below the center being emptied…and reports of so much paperwork that the fire dept. and building depts. are still going through it. One question that needs answering for many is what was the followup after the dryer fire late last year and was this business part of the Town fire inspection in process…said to have been starting in the south end of town? We know from the Fountainhead was the first..acknowledged by the Town Manager and the VFD…and we also know the downtown businesses have been inspected…from their own reports weeks ago to this writer…It would make sense that an inspection was done on Ocean Hyperbaric. It is among 3 locations in town that have tanks..the other 2 are the gas station and Beach Hardware….The building at 4001 Ocean is now under the control the BSO Homicide Unit, headed by Sergeant Glenn Bukata.

The Commissioners are receiving frequent updates on the situation from BSO Chief Scott Gooding,  thanks to Comm. Dodd asking for this to be done regularly at the 4/28-29 2009 Commission meeting under a new business item he put on… …Along with the news alerts from BSO …it is a real plus for our community…

Excerpts from the Sentinel…

‘That center was founded in 1972 by Dr. Richard Neubauer, who died in 2007. Corporate records list his widow, Winnie, 83, of Pompano Beach, as its current manager. Winnie Neubauer could not be reached for comment despite two messages left on her answering machine.

Kenitz worked at the Neubauer clinic until 2005, and complained about safety, she said.

“They are using chambers that are pretty old chambers,” she said.

Jachles too said the chambers in the room that exploded “appeared older.”‘
