For the record, Chief Perkins is in receipt of our request / demand that McIntee NOT BE ALLOWED on our premises for a fire or medical call. Other residents have made this request verbally to no avail. We suggest, however, that all residents with the same opinion also let their wishes be known in writing to Chief Perkins.

At the last town meeting there was a gentleman who came up to the Dias and started to bad mouth AMR on their equipment and training. For all that AMR has done for this town at no extra expense to the town was wrong. When they took over for BSO they came in with a brand new unit with all the newest equipment. When the town needed extra units they were there. We have never had better EMS Services then we have now and I feel safe knowing they are there. Even the editor of the paper By the sea futures praised AMR for their they way treated him in time of need. Here is a copy of that article.

DATE APRIL 3, 2009

ByTheSeaFuture AMR PROFESSIONALSM COMMENDED
New Year’s is normally a night of celebration, but for me it turned out to be a nightmare
this year. My wife Ellen and I were preparing to go out to dinner and I went into the
bathroom to shave. As I turned to leave I tripped over our dog and fell. When I hit the
fl oor the pain was excruciating, and I knew right away that I had either broken my leg
or fractured my hip.
Ellen wanted to call 911 immediately but I was reluctant to do so. In Lauderdale-By-
The-Sea, when you call 911, you not only get our ambulance service, AMR, but the paid
volunteer fi re department often responds as well. I did not want Jerry McIntee and a
dozen or so paid volunteers getting in AMR’s way, wandering around my apartment or
standing over me gawking as I lay helpless on the fl oor.
Since I had to get to the hospital, we had no choice but to call 911. I left instructions
at the front desk of my building that this was a medical call only, not a fi re, and I did
not want any volunteer fi remen admitted to my apartment. Fortunately, the volunteers
did not show up.
AMR arrived within minutes of my
call, led by EMS Chief Brooke Liddle.
As he bent down to attend to
me, I introduced myself and told
him that I am the publisher of
ByTheSeaFuture newspaper. I was
concerned about this, since we had
just printed an editorial which was
critical of AMR, but I wanted to be
honest with Mr. Liddle and make
sure he knew who I was.
I also told him about my reluctance to call 911 because I didn’t want the VFD in my
apartment. Mr. Liddle looked me in the eye and told me not to worry about anything.
He could not have been more professional. When I fell, I ended up wedged between
two doorways in a precarious position. The paramedics gently lifted me onto a board,
then placed me on a stretcher. Their expertise was amazing. They then got me into
the ambulance and took me to Holy Cross Hospital, where I underwent an emergency
operation.
Things did not go as well as I would have hoped with my recovery, and I ended up
spending nearly three months at Holy Cross. Mr. Liddle contacted me several times
while I was in the hospital to see how I was doing and wish me well. I am fi nally home
now and feeling much better. I spoke to Mr. Liddle recently and told him that I intend to
write this article about my experience. AMR has a tough job to begin with, and I know
that the pressure they are under from McIntee and the VFD only makes things worse.
With that in mind, I would like to publicly thank Mr. Liddle, Paramedic Captain Donald
Anderson, EMT Kevin Padden, Paramedic Robbie Salvino and EMT Ryan Dussia at AMR
for their quick and professional response to my call. In all likelihood, I would not be here
today if it were not for them. Their kindness and professionalism is greatly appreciated.

Ip.s. I know the VFD will be a great dept once jerry is out of the picture wich I hope will be very soon.

Matt the key word your forgetting is the "appropriate" responders and at the "appropriate" time. What would happen if the suicide threat was by a firearm? The majority of males use or threaten the use of a firearm in suicide cases. What if a firefighter rushed in, like our illustrious Deputy Chief did, and the shooter decides he wants to take someone with him knowing full well that law enforcement will now have to do the deed for him.

The protocol used nationwide is for fire and EMS to stage a safe distance away and wait until law enforcement has secured the scene. The last time I knew firefighters and medics didn’t wear Kevlar.
