Copping Copper

February 28, 2008 by Barbara

www.sunsentinel.com

The Hollywood manager of the underground utilities unit has now joined four of those he supervised in being charged of stealing copper wire and water meters then selling them to scrap metal yards.

If true, they systematically stole city property for profit.

They are all now on paid leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Building sites have been aware for some time now the big draw of criminals looking to scrap found metals…but city employees…. yikes!

No Confidence

February 27, 2008 by Barbara

www.sunsentinel.com

Fort Lauderdale Police have decided to initiate a no confidence vote for the City Manager and one Assistant City Manager.

They are still working without a contract….negotiations are scheduled…union approved the move…..

City replied that this does not help the situation….no wonder negotiations are iffy!

Jabs At Jenne

February 27, 2008 by Barbara

Sun-Sentinel Political Blog…

Sheriff Lamberti hits the campaign trail….

He had some veiled jabs for the former sheriff …. Ken Jenne…now in prison…

“It’s not Al Lamberti Sheriff’s office, and I’m not going to put my name on everything.”

As the only Republican candidate….Lamberti is eager to maintain his position.

Now, if he had only kept his word to our Town Manager ….not to saddle us with the extra BSO personal …we operated in the interim just fine with one less.

Let’s Play Ball!

February 26, 2008 by Barbara

Log online for a map of where the teams are playing for Spring Training!

Better than Punxsutawney Phil…..when it comes to seeing how much winter is left!

Just wish the Marlins were not going to the Orange Bowl….a bitter pill for us season ticket owners….

bcbythesea hubby says that instead of spending the reported 70 million recently to complete the cricket stadium at State Road 7 and Sunrise….and the expected 40 million+ to keep the Orioles in Fort Lauderdale for their spring training….a stadium for the Marlins could have been here in Broward!

Take a look at Bob Norman’s letter to Wayne Huizenga…

If you are not a regular reader of Bob’s blog…link on and enjoy!

He has some great historic articles…including the LBTS article about former Mayor Parker…

in fact right after that article came out…on the front page of the New Times….the New Times boxes suddenly disappeared from town and from Sea Ranch Plaza!

New commission….maybe those boxes can come back to town along with boxes for any paper willing to pay for them in town!

What You See Vs. What You Read

February 24, 2008 by Barbara

www.miamiherald.com

On Thursday in the Herald’s Business section, a depressing story about Key West and the Duval Street blues….their economic slowdown…business is bad… nobody is eating out much….nobody is buying at the stores…..

Today’s Business section about gambling on the convention center hotel. The pitfalls that have come to others who have tried this.

Tourism is down in Florida…both papers say….

Yet…

A walk down ElMar Drive this season….finds No Vacancy signs …..overflowing restaurants… in town (and out)…..even the “white elephant” parking lot is full or fuller than it has been!

Traffic is a nightmare… the stores are full….the malls are full… the beach is full………..

Maybe we need to change our motto….from “The prettiest Small Town in America” to “The Luckiest Small Town In America”

Brittany Wallman….How’s that for a story?

Courtrooms Empty

February 19, 2008 by Barbara

on www.jaablog.com

Bill Gellin..once again has shown that a new court house…is not needed because of overcrowded courtrooms. A check in October and today shows that by 3 pm 20+ are empty!

This is akin to the decrease in students at schools and the need for more…more… more…….when the numbers say otherwise.

It Evolved

February 19, 2008 by Barbara

wwwsunsentinel.com.

It’s official…by a 4-3 vote the Florida State Board of Education approved schools to address the issue of teaching evolution as the scientific theory of evolution.

The addition of adding the scientific theory beginning….evolved….they quipped…over the last week!

Sheriff Lamberti Has Company

February 6, 2008 by Barbara

BSO Sheriff Lamberti has one more new opponent running against him in his run for Broward top law enforcement position.

He will still be the only Republican.

The list includes the following Democrats; Bruce Uldolf, a former assist. state atty.;Pat Aahara a retired Palm Beach County sheriff’s lt;,Billy Davison, a plumber;S,Shak Dhanji, a human relations commissioner; Scott Israel, chief of police for North Bay Village;Richard J. Lemack, Hollywood assist. city manager;Wiley Thompson III, former administrator under Jenne.

I was gung ho on Lamberti, especially after observing the Jenne effect in LBTS, but that confidence was dashed when our Town Manager presented the glaringly familiar antics of the old Jenne regime.

Lamberti did not keep his word to her and is sticking us with a BSO Sergeant LBTS does not require at a cost to us of an additional 120 thousand dollars!

So maybe it will not be a done deal at the polls after all!
