Here’s The Scoop … Merry Christmas & Happy New Year … To All … My New Year’s Resolution … It’s Time To Say Goodbye…

December 19, 2010 by Barbara

GOODBYE ….

Dear Readers … this writer wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year in 2011… The end of January 2011 will mark 3 years for my BCbythesea.com website … and I can truly say it’s been quite a ride  … Full of ups and downs… and everything in-between …and I mean everything!…

Through it all I always had high hopes for the future of this town … in order to get it back on track after the 2008 municipal election ….I was never shy about posting or speaking my opinions … no matter how much hot water it would get me in or how many “slaps” I would receive from foes and friends alike …..

I made it my business to supply you all with as much archived background material and public records requests as I could obtain in order to support my opinions and to allow readers to come to their own conclusions on whether they agreed with me or not…. now armed with that information that so many were not privy to prior to those postings ….

The turning point of course came last March with the 65% landslide win to overthrow the CIC majority I helped put in place in 2008 …That “slate” of three comprised of candidates Mayor Roseann Minnet/Scot Sasser and Chris Vincent who stepped up on that dais after such a strong win knew they had much to get done…. And while I am still pretty harsh more often than not in my after meeting postings… they have proven to me and the 65% who gave them their seats up there …it was the correct decision we all made in the voting booth…

This writer wrote about their many successes as they approached 100 days in office as well as posting what we should be thankful for on Thanksgiving 2010…(prev. posts)… Editor Mark Brown did much the same while including more successes that took place after Thanksgiving in his new editorial in this month’s ByTheSeaFuture … (see link below)…

Anyone who looks at the Town’s website can find more information available to them than I ever thought I would ever see thanks to PIO Steve D’Oliveira and  New Town Manager Connie Hoffmann…Much more is to come ….including e-alerts ….as the site expands and improves further with new technology put in place… http://www.lauderdalebythesea-fl.gov/ ….Our government channel on Comcast… channel 78 now has different music playing in the background.. as well as the welcome addition of community niceties placed front and center such as the Christmas-By-The-Sea 2010 photos being shown ….The Chamber of Commerce has upgraded their site as well and that too has provided those of you online with more information on happenings in town as well as facts and figures on the Welcome Center and how we’re doing as a tourist destination … http://www.lbts.com/chamber.html …The Pompano Pelican has expanded its coverage online … http://pompanopelican.webs.com/ … as well as its copies available in LBTS in the condos and in certain store and Town buildings… and of course hard at work … still … is our only local newspaper…. the National Award Winning ByTheSeaFuture thanks to Publisher Michael Arker…Managing Editor James Fletcher and especially Editor and writer Mark Brown who together provide both a hard copy and online monthly report of all that is happening in and around town and beyond … http://www.bytheseafuture.org/ …The residents…businesses…tourists and this writer are more than covered …like we never were before …thanks to these “vehicles”  in place providing us all with an abundance of transparent and timely information …

I made my 2011 New Year’s Resolution ….

I truly believe thanks to all of them this is the right time for me to say goodbye as the “Chief Blogger” posting all  the “scoops” around town … Each month since the election last March has been a tug -of-war for me deciding if and when I should make an exit… It became a balancing act that got a more than a little out of balance due to being so far away from home as each month added up to nine months thus far… Even harder now that Lilly is eight months old (Dec. 18th) and suddenly mobile …She started crawling 1 week ago … making Nana’s double duty … triple duty as a result of her constant wandering in wonderment …something she has always possessed and can now finally act upon 24/7 ! … Also throw into the mix  two other factors I did not foresee last winter as I prepared to come to Chicago … First, that Lilly’s mom would be traveling more than I anticipated due to her evolutionary discovery .. (prev. posts)…which meant more research was required of her …as well as more invites to speak at conferences in the states  and overseas as a result of her paper being published extending my stay here for another 18 months or so… and I am still suffering from the effects of my flawed injection of the flu shot I received over 2 months ago which flares up dramatically after typing for long periods on posts.. leaving little doubt that the best way to stop the constant pain is to stop the constant posting…

In 2006 I began participating in LBTS Town politics after my children were grown and I had the time to get heavily involved … especially after what I witnessed going on at that time …and continuing on in 2007….2008…2009 and 2010 ….While I will no longer be posting. ..and I may not be standing at the Jarvis Hall podium making my public comments..I will still participate as a resident and a taxpayer by continuing to watch all the meetings and special community seminars dealing with the next “chapter” of the Town’s Master Plan…I will avidly read the local newspaper …and all other news covering our town…as well as reading the extensive backup materials supplied by the Town online… and I will contact my Commissioners with any concerns …ideas .. or relevant information I can share with them ….. because just like all of you… LBTS is my still my home and there is no place else like it!…

Again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and of course ….a big thank you ….to all my “Avid Readers”….

No more to come…

Here’s The Scoop…Here A Pavilion…There A Pavilion…

December 18, 2008 by Barbara

COMMERCIAL BLVD. LBTS – PAVILION RISING…

A walk last night …and a close -up view of the new LBTS- Pavilion rising…with a new  rendering attached to the fence…( note…you have to get up close to see it….)…the right rendering…according to the Town Manager…the one without walls…without bathrooms…(which were to have plumbing installed underground for future installation…which will definitely require those missing walls)……making the Town Topics rendition…WRONG…(just another reason to discard this worthless outdated publication…Commissioners please take note)…It shows a pavilion in the works…that lacks  any ingenuity…..and  individuality …it has taken a turn so far off track… from the original contest entry  and the ultimate prize winner from Fort Lauderdale Art Institute winner Edwin Forbes…that once again in this town… many…many people…residents…commissioners…board members…along with the students…wasted a lot of time to end up with….a pretty generic centerpiece…when you look at it…

The only remaining reminder of the original architecture….the roof…and that…(now more apparent in this rendering)… may end up being a trouble maker…as it makes a home for unwanted flying friends…(a sore subject often brought up over this long process…but I admit….I did not really pay attention until seeing this new attached depiction…OOPS!)….

I also remember an entry brought forth from the past commission dais…former Vice Mayor Yanni… a photo of a neighboring pavilion…no walls…no bathrooms…just a roof……(2 compliments for the former Vice Mayor in the same week…WOW!)…….less poles… and I believe taller…more sight line…to the ocean…

HERE A PAVILION…THERE A PAVILION….ours will be joining them in February….

Here’s The Scoop…Plantation Fire Department…LBTS-VFD…

December 12, 2008 by Barbara

Chief Robert S. Pudney

A Message From The Chief…’A combination department’…

http://www.psd.plantation.org/fire/fire_chief-message.html

6-27-06 …14 . New Business …Item D…page 15/ 7-11-06 ….9. Commissioner Comments page 12/ 7-25-06…13. Old Business…Item E…page 24….Plantation Fire Truck…for VFD…

http://www.lauderdalebythesea-fl.gov/town/arc-meetings-2006.htm

May 9, 2007…Broward County Commissioners…Chief Pudney explaining the Plantation way of training and operating a combination department…

http://www.broward.org/charter/pdf/pssc050907_final_sod.pdf.

The VFD November Meeting Minutes… a motion made by Senior Training Officer McIntee…that passed unanimously…previously posted VFD category…

McIntee, noted there were 3 more applicants coming from the Plantation fire department, he made a motion that all new applicants coming from Plantation could not apply until they had been out of Plantation for a year;due to the sudden rush of Plantation applicants wanting to quit Plantation and apply here. Passed

BCbythesea…

Why would the LBTS-VFD not want to take well trained Plantation Firefighters on as Associate Members of the VFD?….

What purpose does it serve to deny entry for one year?

Was there any conversation between the Chief of Plantation and the Senior Training Officer to precipitate such a motion?….

It is the opinion of this writer that the Plantation “combination” department may be the future of the LBTS-VFD …to make it a long term viable option for the town…with a Fire Chief…being separate from the VFD….hired by the Town…

Contrary to well meaning readers who have informed this writer of rumors…..I am not against having a LBTS-VFD….just extremely concerned with the VFD in it’s present form…

I was not involved or privy to the previous VFD…only a supporter from afar …donating funds to the Booster Club…who eventually came to the podium to speak to retain them…first with the BSO….the status quo at the time…… and ultimately to make them the town’s sole provider…. I “drank the Kool-aid” …and looked upon anyone who doubted the VFD…or brought up questionable acts by those in the department…. as “traitors”..on a “witch hunt”…”evil”…”hated”…and more….(sound familiar?)…

Quite honestly…if the previous VFD was anything like what this new VFD is presenting itself to be from the dais”2 hats”……from the public records that we are able to obtain….and from the questionable acts brought to light by those who have either resigned or been terminated…then it certainly makes past concerns by those who were informed…and were privy….completely understandable…

This change of opinion… comes from breaking away…getting information and seeing the light….

This and That….

June 10, 2008 by Barbara

From one of many….piles of info…saved for ?…..

1. a copy of a news item…date unknown… but timely as we face the Fire Assessment at Budget Workshop #1 tomorrow night at 5pm….

‘Tamarac art fund could be spent on fire-rescue, police’

a resident of Tamarac…Patti Lynn wrote in the following suggestion … after hearing her city manager pronounce that funds for a public art program were not going to be paid for by the taxpayers….

‘If the city of Tamarac is forcing builders, developers and contractors to pay 1% of construction value of the improvement to the art fund, I have some other ideas. Change the ordinance so the 1% goes to fire-rescue fees or police presence fees,or property tax reduction fees….’

She says this can be reallocated….that it is done all the time….and this suggestion would offer immediate relief and assistance to every resident and business in the city….

BCbythesea….does LBTS have an ordinance that forces the same…which could be used for the same purpose…fire-rescue…capital improvements…if not…why not?….

Worth investigating….hope a commissioner will put this forth tomorrow…..

2. ‘Tree roots can’t ravage this sidewalk’….Rick Hampson…USA today…archives…www.usatoday.com

‘A rubber sidewalk”… Rubbersidewalks of Gardena, California….began in 2004…more than 60 municipalities have ordered the panels….the panels do not crack….they have spaces between them for rain to escape…and are removable for roots to be re-directed…they are recycled…made of old tires…softer to walk on….more expensive than concrete initially….but just as previously posted …from the Disney Garden show…a look at the future… now…along with rubber mulch… imitation ….. not anything like astro-turf…no need for watering…good lookin…. grass exhibited… last month….

BCbythesea….as we “green” LBTS …and after the cost over-runs…and sidewalk madness endured with the Seagrape Drive Streetscape fiasco….this might be well worth the Master Steering Committee doing some research for the next projects in town.. just need a commissioner to direct them….

3. ‘Against the Wind”…Robyn A. Friedman…Sun. edition..magazine..city&shore home…6/8/08

Tower of Power…the PowerTower by Gaia Power Technologies…www.gaiapowertechnologies.com

a new approach to backup power….can be installed indoors and uses batteries to provide clean, quiet and emmission-free backup power. The PowerTower can provide 11KV of continuous power and can be connected to multiple batteries to provide power as long as needed…

BCbythesea…worth a look…for those who cannot do backup with natural gas hookup…or cannot get a large generator due to zoning…this might be the answer….

4.’Middle management’…Rod Stafford Hagwood… Sun…6/8/08  ….. www.sunsentinel.com

for those women who have a problem with the dreaded “puckered” backed waist from getting the dastardly jeans that fit the “curvey” hips and thighs…this brand might just save the day…

online……..www.littleinthemiddle.com …………       www.truejeans.com

or if you want to make the trek….Oh My Bod Boutique in Delray Beach…1128 E. Atlantic Blvd. …561-272-0029

BCbythesea…considers it my duty to help any woman ….in any way possible ….to make buying a pair of jeans less painful…………just kidding!…

NOTE: feedback from any purchasers…most welcome….

more to come….

Giggles

June 8, 2008 by Barbara

EXTRA…..EXTRA…….McDONALDS IS NOT “GREEN”……….

BCbythesea hubby doing his part to cut down on CO2 emissions….at the McDonald’s drive-thru on A1A in Fort Lauderdale….gave his order ….

arrived at the pick-up window….

only to be told….he would not be served…. for not having a motor!…….

being without his lock…he tried to bring his bike inside…to quickly pick up his order…..

no such luck….

no bikes inside…they said….

so with one eye on his food and other eye on his unlocked non- motorized mode of travel….

he was finally able to complete the transaction……..

Shame on you…McDonald’s….

We knew you weren’t “green” when you stopped serving Shamrock shakes….so long ago….but this….

NOTE:……Burger King in LBTS…..is definitely “green”….

Giggles

June 3, 2008 by Barbara

BCbythesea…giggles for the day…

MSNBC Ishares commercial…showing scenes of rough times for investors…a slow playing “we all just need a little of”…….. overlapping with the small print verbal warning…. “loss of principal”…. at the finish…….OOPs!

All those BCbythesea readers old enough to remember and who watched the original Saturday Night Live Ensemble… might recall this outstanding skit…

“It’s a floor wax…. No, it’s a dessert topping!”…

in that vein….

“It’s a Pringles can….No, it’s an urn!”….

The inventor of the Pringles potato chips can …invented in the 1960s…died this week….and as requested….

he was cremated and buried in a Pringles potato chip can….

Good Morning LBTS

May 27, 2008 by Barbara

Back on the Red-Eye…

landed at 6 am….red-eyed …alright…

but business does not stop… a few cups of coffee ….and a shower ought to do it?….

Will a crash and burn be in the making by the regular 7 pm commission meeting …with 6 pm parking workshop this evening?….

BCbythesea just may observe this one from the couch on TV?….

Never spent so much time in an airport….but if it had to happen…

in a glass half- full  frame of mind….lack of sleep will do that ….

Las Vegas Airport was a good one to be stuck in….

also…not having small kids to entertain….that would have made 7+ hours seem like 14…

catch up time ….and that first cup of java…..

more to come…..
