Here’s The Scoop ….The CIC-PAC Decides To Clarify Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Candidate Edmund Malkoon’s “Endorsement” In The 2012 Race…. It’s Called Circling The Wagons …Covering Your Bases … Saving Face? …

January 30, 2012 by Barbara

WAIT A MINUTE!….

Dear Readers …you remember that email (see below) Candidate for Seat 3 Edmund Malkoon sent after the Jan.15, 2012 CIC-PAC meeting he and his opponent Mark Brown were invited to attend thanking them and stating “I am so grateful to have been given your trust. I will endeavor to promote the ideals your organization has fought so hard to achieve.” …Malkoon went on to make some ominous remarks about fears he had in the weeks ahead concerning the BTSF newspaper etc…He concluded with this statement…” I understand you may be sending out an email. If you can ask for word of mouth, sign placement, and help with poll day, i would greatly appreciate it.” ….Well, on Sunday night that email went out from Bob Roberts to members and those who have not been for years …. (see below) …Bob Roberts stated the Board wanted the minutes to be released for members …I have been informed the minutes being sent out has not happened before this… The minutes are hardly minutes of a meeting …They are more like a need to calm those who may be uncomfortable with what appeared to be an endorsement of a Candidate who made the decision after that Jan. 15, 2012 meeting to run an ad in the BTSF and promote his party affiliation and that of his opponents in a nonpartisan election!… The brief synopsis of the Jan. 15, 2012 CIC-PAC meeting are not quite accurate either according to some in attendance …The “well attended meeting” brought out 20-25 …The CIC board itself is close to that number with spouses….Then there’s this one… “Members were pleased that both candidates pledged to preserve one of the Citizen Initiative Committee’s most important issues – maintaining the current 3-story height zoning in original Lauderdale by the Sea.” It was actually a promise that neither Candidate would introduce a referendum to change the zoning for heights… WOW!… I thought it was incredible that the CIC-PAC was endorsing (or not?-see below) ….Malkoon who is a paid-up long time member of the UOT-PAC who is being coached, mentored and supported by former UOT Pres. Bob Fleishman and Cindy Geesey …but this promise the CIC asked for tops even that!…It goes against the very ideals the CIC are based on…the ability for the people to unite in order to change or preserve the town through referendum! …Originally Bob Roberts sent out an email stating the CIC would not be endorsing either candidate this year …The word after Malkoon’s email and the signs going up in the Furth’s yard as well as other CIC Board members was an endorsement was received on Jan. 15th …Bob Roberts in these “minutes” sets the record straight 2 weeks later though… “The CIC will not officially endorse any candidates for this year’s municipal election. However, Chairman Couriel took a straw poll of the audience after the presentations as to which candidate they thought was most aligned with the CIC’s “small-town quality of life values.” The members voted their support for Edmund Malkoon.” …So it can be surmised that while the CIC did not officially endorse Malkoon they believed him that he will indeed … “endeavor to promote the ideals your organization has fought so hard to achieve.” …. That CIC “straw poll” and this setting the record straight CIC email to CIC  members was certainly not what Malkoon was counting on from the group he jumped ship to for votes!….

Mr Chairman and Board Members,

Thank you for keeping an open mind and giving me the opportunity to come speak. I am so grateful to have been given your trust. I will endeavor to promote the ideals your organization has fought so hard to achieve. As i said at the Town Forum ” We arent all that different in what we seek for this Town. ” I will be your representative and be open to dialogue from all.

We have 2 weeks left. I am going to start pounding the pavement for the second time. I also will have a mailer going out before Weds. I am a little cautious on The next Future paper. Its the last edition before the election and a bit worried about things being made up. But hopefully the voters will see the conflict. I hope it remains neutral.

I understand you may be sending out an email. If you can ask for word of mouth, sign placement, and help with poll day, i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Again!

Edmund Malkoon

Dear Fellow CIC Members:

During our January meeting attending members decided that the minutes of the meeting should be distributed to our members. The following are the minutes.

Sincerely,
The CIC Board of Directors

Lauderdale by the Sea Citizens Initiative Committee

Minutes of Membership Meeting, January 15, 2012
The meeting was called to order by CIC Chair, Joe Couriel at 7:00 pm. The CIC Board of Directors had invited the two LBTS Commission Candidates, Mark Brown and Edmund Malkoon to give presentations and answer questions from our members. The meeting was well-attended and very informative.

Members were pleased that both candidates pledged to preserve one of the Citizen Initiative Committee’s most important issues – maintaining the current 3-story height zoning in original Lauderdale by the Sea.

The CIC will not officially endorse any candidates for this year’s municipal election. However, Chairman Couriel took a straw poll of the audience after the presentations as to which candidate they thought was most aligned with the CIC’s “small-town quality of life values.” The members voted their support for Edmund Malkoon.

Meeting adjourned at 9:45 pm.

Here’s The Scoop … Scene And Heard Around Town …

May 1, 2010 by Barbara

WAS THIS WHERE THE MOTEL ROOM WAS?…….

Did the former Town Manager have a room at the Public Safety Complex?… We have long heard rumors that there was one…Anyone taken a tour of the entire “Motel”?…. If so, did she also reimburse herself for staying there?…

……………………..

THE SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR IS SMILING BIG THESE DAYS ….

We hear Armilio  (Senior Center Director) is one “Happy Camper”…He had his annual Broward County Audit this week…Turns out no only did he pass with flying colors (just as he has every year prior)…It was the regular annual audit and turns out  (no surprise to this writer) the county were never contacted by the former Town Manager as she and “Clottey” and the “gang” made accusations on the dais and put this man and Senior Center participants through hell!… We also hear that the contract was misread by both Clottey and Colon and correctly by Comm. Sasser… there was never a fear of any county retribution for funds!…

……………………….

WHERE’S THE PAVILION CLOCK?….

What happened to the $1000 clock that former Comm. Silverstone and former Town Photog Marc Furth were making for the Beach pavilion?…We awaited some sort of campaign unveiling ..It never happened…The clock was shown over a year ago at a meeting…displayed in front of the dais…While it looked like a mail away for the kit project…it was paid for by us taxpayers and Comm. Silverstone said the 2nd component was in the works for the accompanying wind or some sort of measurement device…So where’s the clock and what was already paid for?…

……………………….

COMING OUT OF THE WOODWORK ….

Former Employees of LBTS are coming forward and contacting this writer (as many have before them) and other key players with a big “Thanks” …. for the terminations of Colon/Olinzock… and more than a willingness to provide information … in the aftermath…

………………………

AUDIT …

Are we in need of an audit?…YEP!… But not a full-blown $200,000 Forensic one!…With the new TM on board and the audits going on in neighboring municipalities (see link below)…we can get to the bottom of things w/out the big buck$….

http://www.investigation.com/claims_auditing.htm

…………………….

WHERE’S THE PARK?….

We hear the “Off-Site” warehouse may hold the park benches that were briefly used for the Minto Park some years back… Code needs to get the new vacant Minto property into compliance with sod and pull out those benches ASAP!…

……………………..

BSO PROVING THEY ARE THE “ONE” FOR LBTS …..

We are told there was a burglary this week at the home a former elected official…and it was done during daytime hours…Before any blame is laid on the BSO from the uninformed …the specifics we are hearing put the onus elsewhere…The BSO has been on a roll with busting crime in town…The problem in the stats it is said come from unlocked doors …on cars and on properties whether intentional or unknown …Check ALL your doors people…before you exit ….the car or the premises…and if you see something that makes you think twice call 911!… As previously posted the BSO submitted their numbers to the municipalities and County yesterday… Don’t skimp on police protection in LBTS!…

……………..

2 LANES ON EL MAR DRIVE …..

The MPSC took a walk last week and looked at the A1A project… (still needs to be canned)…The El Mar Drive Project will be addressed as well…1 lane or 2 lanes…Members may want to go the the Town website and take a look at the 2007 special meeting…2 lanes must remain…Those that go to make a change in the lanes ….. will see a lot of bark with the bites of the walkers on El Mar Drive!…

…………………..

CHANGING OF THE “GUARDS” … 2 “BOBS” STEPPING DOWN….

The 2 PAC Presidents are stepping down in Town…UOT Pres. Bob Fleishman sent an e-mail saying he was done May with the UOT “blasts” being done today May 1st!..and CIC Chair Bob Roberts sent an e-mail a few weeks back looking for new board members…to possibly follow his counterpart in stepping down from the top position…. Any takers?….

………………….

LOOKING TO SERVE THE TOWN?….

Residents who want to serve the Town on a Town Board…Board of Adjustments…Those who advise the Commission on plans that think “outside the box”…will now be a night time job!… Meeting the 1st Wed. on each month at 6:30…Applications for the appointment need to be in for consideration on May 11, 2010…

………………….”

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT.?….

Are they or aren’t they the LBTS “Volunteer” Fire Dept.?… Questions are being asked about the lack of “Volunteer” on some apparatus these days …(outgoing VM McIntee brought it up on his last day on the dais)…along with the # of full- time employees?… Growing pains?..Or changes ahead?… The new Town Manager needs to be informed she is a non-voting member of the VFD and she has the right for oversight…It is clear the Townspeople want to keep the VFD …What is not so clear ….does the VFD want to keep the volunteer in the LBTS Fire Dept. emblem?…. The VFD website has been updated!…. 2 items of interest …the “knox box” …which we were told should have been in place for the gas leak situation last month…and “Fire Marshal Steve Paine”….(why not listed as VFD not Fire Inspector?)…

………………………….

WANT THE LOCAL NEWS AND THE CALENDAR OF UPCOMING EVENTS … #1 NEWS SOURCE …”THE” LBTS LOCAL NEWSPAPER LEFT STANDING AFTER MARCH 9th, 2010 …

http://www.bytheseafuture.org/

……………………..

SHE KNOWS!……

It appears Town Clerk White and other members of staff do know how to e-mail after all…The memos coming out of town hall have rapidly declined as the #1 communication …Town Hall has now begun to enter the 21st century with the ousting of the last 2 Town Managers!….

……………………..

JUDGE OLIVER PARKER?

“JAABlog published a new entry entitled “NO SO FAST …” on 4/28/2010 12:31:32 PM, written by JAABLOG.
NO SO FAST …

Buddy Nevins reports that Judge Lee Seidman has filed against Judge Susan Lebow. The article is here.

The announcement, however, is premature. Seidman did, in fact, redesignate his county court filing to Lebow’s race with Brenda Snipes’ Office, but that was strictly for campaign account reasons. He is still free to qualify in any race he chooses.

Seidman is currently en route to Tallahassee, with, we’re told, four circuit court qualifying packets. He may file against Lebow, or any other candidate, so long as the Friday at noon filing deadline is met. This one is coming down to the wire.

In other news, we’re hearing that candidate Oliver Parker may be jumping too. Possibly something to do with the Aleman/Perlman race” …

…………..

HE’S GOT COMPANY!… BEVERLY KENNEDY COUNTY COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE…

“She needs your support to become the new County Commissioner for Dist.4 to
represent the people of Broward. Beverly would like to finish the strategic plan
which she began in 2008 to solve Broward County Courthouse problems when
she proposed a plan to reform the Broward County Clerk of the Courts office,
Nov. 4, 2008 . Although she received over 148,000 votes, yet lost the
election, her plan and purpose for running has been over 70%
implemented !
Unlike the County Commissioner incumbent for Dist 4 , Bev
Kennedy’s plan would not raise taxes , nor waste our valuable financial
resources that should be used for other necessary Broward County Services.
Stay posted for weekly updates to: www.Beverly4Broward.com
Officially Beverly Kennedy is filed to be eligible as a Democratic
candidate for the Dist. 4 of the Broward County Commission Primary
Election Aug. 24,2010. She has chosen an excellent Deputy Treasurer
and Asst. Campaign Manager Randell (Randy) L. Pelham, who
professionally has over 17 years Law Enforcement experience, and
serves as Detective Sergeant of a Economic Crimes Unit.”

Here’s The Scoop…It’s A Mc-Furth Fourth Of July Brought To You By The CIC/VFD……

July 4, 2009 by Barbara

“IT’S NOT POLITICAL”….Vice Mayor McIntee/Comm. Jim Silverstone…

100_3905

Dear Readers…This front and center self promotional July 4th float says it all  ( 1 of 2 in the parade)…It was definitely political…It was narcissistic….. And it was unbelievably  tone-deaf to the Town and where we find ourselves in at the present time!…

From the opening blunder of applying for a special event permit as a Town/CIC/VFD co-sponsored event …the sole control for the event for Coordinator Marc Furth…and the secretive and suspect planning …( a far cry from the co-chaired transparent event the year prior)….the 24 hour notice limited posting of meetings…( done with the Town Manager being fully complicit)… …The Mc-Furths went against the DEP’s known recommendations by planning  the fireworks display smack-dab on 3/4 plywood on the beach in the center of town…closing down the entry…along with a  280 ft. radius  perimeter…..requiring  Nova University monitors to be assigned to watch for any disturbances in the area to the sea turtle nests…  The Mc-Furth’s told the DEP untruths for why it must be on the beach…Coordinator Marc Furth made demands per a letter to the Town Manager/Commissioners that he reprinted in his  Mc-Furth BTSTimes accusing the Mayor and Comm. Dodd when they did their due diligence in checking out the facts…The Vice Mayor made “bloated” statements from the dais…and at the July 1st volunteer meeting…throwing out “garbage numbers” of who was volunteering for the event…going so far as to say his wife “turned away volunteers”….and the response from the VFD had been tremendous…(with Chief Perkin’s having to promise Comm. Dodd that the members not participating would not be fired as a memo said they would be …per the Dep. Chief)….Mark Conn and Cristie Furth spoke of a entries in the parade and for the afternoon party that never appeared….(Pompano FD engine/NY FD Engine/Antique Fire engine/Traveling Vietnam War wall)….Mark Conn said there would be 80 entries…(was an “entrie”counted as a person, a bike, or a trailer?)… The participants were as follows…….The Furth Float (LBTS Artificial Reef Project)….The  Marines…The American Legion- Thomas P. Johnston Post 222…VFD Captain Mark Conn on VFD-ATV (with a Sal’s towing ad on the side..a permanent ad)….NYPD car….The Mayor…(CHEERS)…VM McIntee and wife…(SILENCE)….Com. Silverstone….(SILENCE)…Comm. Clottey…(SILENCE)…Comm. Dodd and wife…(CHEERS)…2 vans with veterans….Army truck with disabled veterans…Congressman Ron Klein…….State Representative Ellyn Bogdanoff….The VFD members walking in front of ATV-Jet Ski….3 VFD-Firetrucks…(Squirt 12 was called to an alarm at the Mayor’s building!)… the VFD-pickup pulling the hurricane trailer…(with the strange permanent lettered sign of Commander Mikos Angeles on the side of it…HUH?)….2 AMR ambulances…Republican David Maymon …(running for State Rep. Dist. 91)…….2  classic cars….The LBTS -Community Church Noah’s Ark float….Lord’s Realty car…Bel Air Assoc. car….Cindy Geesey- POA Hometown Hero car (see below)….By-The- Sea- Future car….Kids on bikes etc…1 classic car…1 classic truck…Choice Environmental truck…and 2 BSO Mounted Police…(which produced a large amount of shock…sadness and anger from the parade attendees for their placement in the parade…behind the garbage truck!)……Political?….OUCH!…They were also the end of the parade… (28 entries)…No Senator Jeff Atwater?…Hmmmm……The crowd on the street was down from prior years…and Publix parking lot was empty…something very unusual for a LBTS parade…Just as the paltry donations (June 24,2009 memo $5,600) …small amount of volunteers …(despite unprecedented excessive measures taken to recruit both)…and silence the “Gang of 3” received as they drove by…it continued on to the afternoon El Prado event…Residents not affiliated with the CIC/VFD stayed away…resulting in an attendance of half of the year before….and we hear that at 3 pm the total cash was also half of what was made the year before…..Those privy to the borrowed City radios used for VFD communication……heard VM/Dep. Chief McIntee yelling at his “troops” for not showing up and helping at their required 4 hour minimum assigned jobs in the park….Included at the event…Pep Boys tent with a sponsored raffle…a Johnny Depp look- a-like pirate… a single tent for selling merchandise ….Pirates of the Treasure Coast…(an out of town vendor)…VFD T-shirts for sale…($5)….Choice Environmental tent for recycling information and getting to know the residents…a Dunk Tank…(at 11 am it was CIC- Mermaid Cristie Furth)…The 2 water slides…and 1 kids ride…classic cars…a band…a beer truck…sno-cones…3 veterans tents…and finally…the Anglin Monument wasn’t the only thing moved out of the park for the Furths…the Town Manager’s gift from last year… …the “United We Stand” sign remained in front of Town Hall…OOPS!…

BC-This writer wrote repeatedly that this “Gang” was in trouble from the start….but with the upheaval reverberating throughout the town as a result of the Town Manager’s “reassignment” (WITH CAUSE!….in the press)….of BSO Police Chief Scott Gooding… on June 26th ….(a move that was and is wholeheartedly supported by them all)….one can only wonder if any one of them is having second thoughts about their future endeavors …political and otherwise…for today’s response should tell them loud and clear….”WE WILL NOT FORGET!”….

2009 POA HOMETOWN HERO….CINDY GEESEY…..Mayor Minnet…State Representative Bogdanoff…..Resident Judy Jones…..

DSC00434

‘Cindy Geesey — Cindy has been part of LBTS for 55 years and has worked very hard on many projects in LBTS for over a decade. She has been a board member of the Chamber of Commerce for eight years, was President of the POA for eight years and introduced many new programs.  She has been on the boards of Sister Cities and the LBTS Performing Arts Center and served on the Board of Adjustment and as Chair of Planning and Zoning for four years.  She’s been a member of LBTS Kiwanis and the Assumption Altar Guild.  She co-chaired the 4th of July festivities for 3 years.  Cindy also does volunteer work for Broward Humane Society and organizes a group from LBTS for the annual Doggy Walk. This event raises thousands of dollars for the shelter.  Cindy is an editor for By The Sea Future newspaper and reports on town happenings to our residents and visitors. Her newest project is bringing military families to LBTS for a free weekend of fun and sun. She collects donations from all of our great merchants and puts everything together for a much needed R & R for families that protect our country.  All and all Cindy is there for LBTS and works hard for the town she loves.’

THE LBTS CHAPTER 2008 ANNUAL GARDEN CLUB CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON….

The local chapter met today in Jarvis Hall to have their annual Christmas luncheon, along with a judging of Garden Club Member’s decorated tables either for use or exhibition…which included a Christmas red and green display… exhibition- score 97……a blue and white creation display…exhibition-score 97…a holiday presentation of red…white and blue…display…to honor our armed services, past and present-score 96 and a final display that was designed around the designer’s 18th century family china…including family crystal-score 98…..

NICE JOB!…

Really like the red and white holiday tree wrapping on the palms on either side of Poinciana and Commercial Blvd…along with Town Hall!…

MUTUAL RESPECT….

I often hear that the 2 new Commissioners are at odds or through with this writer…depending on the day…and the post….BUT…as written in the Sausage Series Category…the “problem” the Mc-Gang had with me…continues to this day …nearly a year after Clottey/Dodd won the election …….it was my belief that THEY ( Clottey/Dodd) should have the last word …and decide what THEY( Clottey/Dodd) wanted to do…because THEY (Clottey/Dodd) were the Candidates…and now as the new Commissioners…this writer still feels the same…imagine that!

You see …here in the civilized world of intelligent adults…( no college degree required)…we can agree to disagree about the subject…the position and the vote…and we do at times…….but we still maintain a friendship of mutual respect…sort of the anti-Mc-Gang theory of politics….and friendship…HMMM…..

HAVE YOU RECEIVED AN OLINZOCK OFFICIAL TOWN LETTER?…

I have not seen one up close and personal…at least not one that like those described by the many town residents and businesses…from the Assistant Town Manager…that have a common thread…in the recipients description of being put off and unsettled by the tone and the content…

Maybe a “mentoring” class should be in order for proper administrative behavior…both in person and by mail?….

PARKING PREDICAMENTS…

As we face yet another round of the age old question…free parking…or revenue…a few queries are in order….why do we have paid parking inside the strip shopping areas along Commercial Blvd…while the Commercial Blvd street parking is free?…

Would it not be better to do it the other way around?…First come…first serve…and if you can’t get in the shopping lot…you pay…like many other towns?…

Where are the owners in all of this…the owners of the buildings?…Are they prepared to cover the maintenance of their lots if parking revenue is gone from having no meters?…

One way or another…it does not matter how many times this item is tabled…it’s revenue…for our looming Parking Department….. only option otherwise ….cutting down this piece of the LBTS government pie….

This writer’s opinion…the bags are a waste of time and money…and destroying the meters themselves….forget them..see if it is not against any state laws to charge for parking on Commercial Blvd. If not it seems the number of spaces….would even out the revenue lost for not charging in the shopping area lots…then go back to the chalk…the 2 hours maximum and be diligent with enforcement..charge 24/7 on all street parking including near Poinciana/Bougainvilla…and initiate a mandatory resident parking permit…that offers the residents 2 hours…at meters….as a bonus for living in town…permit stickers can be matched with license plates…similar to Condo parking permits……Make employers responsible for their employees getting town parking permits that makes it easy for parking enforcement to see the employee permit sticker matches with license plate…parked in the proper areas…then forget the entry ways…and update the parking to the new credit card friendly boxes…brought up by the Vice Mayor…as seen in Buffalo …(previous post)…and put this issue to bed…

more to come….

Garden Club Flower Show A Hit!

February 24, 2008 by Barbara

Word is out that the Garden Club Flower Show was a hit.

This Year’s LBTS Annual Spring Flower Show and Tea was perfectly titled…Enchanted Places.

Attendees found just that….taking in all the wonderful fragrances, while marveling at the spectacular arrangements.

This Saturday afternoon drew quite a crowd …..so many that a seat could not even be found for tea on the portico.

Vice Mayor McIntee, Commissioner Dodd, his wife Penny, and Commissioner Clottey joined the members and the residents for this afternoon delight.

We look forward to next years event!
