Here’s The Scoop … No More Band-Aids … The Future Of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea … Part 1 …

August 12, 2010 by Barbara

THERE ISN’T ONE BIG ENOUGH …

Dear Readers…This is part 1 of a series of posts on where we find ourselves today in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and its future… This writer did some research while looking into the Sewer Enterprise Fund debacle that has left the Town in a precarious situation due to what appears to be some inside Town Hall decisions made by a chosen few in charge  …both in the administration and on the dais at the time while Broward County Property Appraiser records show one apparently owned in SRC at the same time …… We will be hit with a large increase in the south end for annual sewer rate increases that were never passed on over the last seven years …. Sea Ranch Club, unaware of any subsidy provided to them since the annexation in 1998, will be hit not only with the Pompano increases past and present but also from the availability charges being presently be covered by the Town per unit as well… Although it will be up to the Commission once all the facts are found… to decide if SRC should be on the hook for paying back 12+years of subsidy paid by the taxpayers …it is unlikely due to the circumstance and the sheer number of voters residing in the three buildings… Full disclosure, this writer lives in SRC and has since 1999…One thing I can tell you about SRC , is if they were presented with additional charges from Pompano from the get-go due to any lack of an agreement after annexation between LBTS and Pompano or the loss of a declaratory judgment as discussed at the special meeting held in 1997 if both municipalities could not come to terms…although at the present time , it appears that option was never followed through on … they would have passed it on to the residents… SRC regularly assesses its owners which is why the buildings were not among those along the ocean in need of major concrete restoration as seen up and down the coast over the last years… in this writer’s opinion…The subject of both SRC and the sewer rate increases will be discussed at the Aug. 25, 2010 5 pm Budget Meeting in Jarvis Hall along with the Town Manager search Workshop before the only Reg. Commission meeting at 7 pm…

OF NOTE: on pg. iv of the 2005-06 Adopted Annual Budget it states “We continue the testing, televising, and repairing of leaks in our aging sanitary sewer system to reduce infiltration and inflow and initiated preliminary discussions with the City of Pompano Beach for renewal of our 30-year Master Sewer Agreement in the South part of Town.”

BC- What was in that 30-year Master Sewer Agreement renewal?…This writer has made a PRR for it today…

In doing the digging for that sewer information, I found some background on the Town as a whole that brought back that sick familiar feeling I had shortly after the election in 2008 when I was co-campaign manager for the winning slate of BTSTimes endorsed /CIC backed candidates for the Commission and found out shortly afterward I was hoodwinked…with actions on the dais and the purchase of the crappy motel for a public safety complex…….Readers have read and heard many times from me throughout the past few years that I resolved to make it my mission to rectify what I helped to create… That came to fruition this year with the ouster of that majority and the big win of the BTSFuture endorsed/UOT backed slate of candidates with a 65% landslide victory…

The former Town Manager …Asst. Town Manager…HR/Risk Manager were terminated while Finance Dir. King resigned …Today, there is no viable CIC-  PAC to be seen (In fact, their newly elected Chair Pomareda has had her house on the market for over a month ) …. The By The Sea Times Newspaper met its demise right after the huge loss for their candidates (with that last candidate issue is still left online) and went out of publication for a second time with the second owners, the Furths  …Any political maneuverings from Town Hall East  (Furth’s Blue Seas Motel on El Mar Drive…the one with the Taxpayer’s $50,000 yellow buoy in front)  ….are all but finished as well with one exception being one leftover supportive Commissioner with her white Prius still seen parked there regularly and seen holding onto her active Blackberry and said to be on the receiving end of some Furth directives during actual meetings in Jarvis Hall…. That’s all well and good but it appears now I have something else to set my sights on to rectify … and that is the future of the town as a whole …..from the infrastructure on up… with planned re-development….

What Comm. Sasser calls “piecemealing”…I call “band-aids”… This Town can no longer use anymore band-aids to fix the problems we are faced with as we re-visit and revise the Town’s Master Plan (MPSC meets next Tues. Aug. 17th at 7pm Jarvis Hall) … There isn’t one big enough to do the job!…..

It was particularly interesting to see what transpired at the time of that last Master Plan accepted by the Commission in 2005 and what came with it …the Economic Task Force and the CRA… It is disheartening to see once again how so much hard work was decimated both politically and literally due to the perfect political “foils” being available to aid in the ruse that ended it when left in the hands of the former Town Manager … leaving LBTS 5 years later in the exact same spot…having the exact same conversations…on how to move forward…UGH!…

In the 2005-2006 Adopted Annual Budget former Town Manager Baldwin wrote his “Budget Message” to the Commission and included the following on page ix-x

“Redevelopment

In conjunction with the appointment of a Master Plan Steering Committee, the Town continues to pursue the development of a Master Plan. As directed by the Commission, the Master Plan Steering Committee submitted a Master Plan prepared by Peter Smith, Inc. for the Commission’s consideration. After several reviews and joint meetings, the Town Commission approved the master Plan.

The Master Plan focuses on various improvements securing and promoting the public welfare of the citizens and residents of the Town. The Plan takes into consideration such issues as drainage, traffic control, the viability of the downtown business district, plans for ensuring the continued success of the hospitality trade, redevelopment within the Town, transportation, and provisions for improvements to the Town’s infrastructure.

In FY 2004-2005, the Commission moved forward by preparing and scheduling a variety of improvements listed in the Master Plan. Specific improvements being targeted are the “gateway” entrance-into-town feature; the redesigning of El Mar Drive to address pedestrian safety, drainage, and underground utilities; townwide swale maintenance and reconfiguration to address proper drainage; and, the completion of a unified land development plan.

Additionally, in FY2004-2005, the Town Commission undertook and Economic Feasibility Study by Goodkin and Associates. This study, too, was reviewed by the Master Plan Steering Committee and submitted to the Commission. The findings, which encourage the redevelopment of Commercial Boulevard and El mar Drive as a local entertainment destination, serve as a catalyst and guideline for the Town redevelopment efforts.

The Town is moving strongly into high-quality redevelopment. Improved infrastructure, updated zoning protection, new buildings with improved architecture, increased beautification, a healthy and economically viable business district all contribute to a healthy municipality. When done properly, the Town residents’ taxed will remain low and services high. If there is no redevelopment, the alternative will be higher taxes and reduced quality of life.”

FY 2010-2011 …. the Master Plan needs to be more than revised…It needs the CRA to be resurrected first by the new Commission and new Administration along with our present community now free of factions and their fear-mongering ….to make sure that 5 years from now LBTS is not still in the exact same spot…having the exact same conversations…on how to move forward… UGH!…

“FLUSH WITH POSSIBILITIES “…

Dear Readers … Since bathrooms on the beach has become more than a pipe dream… pun intended… ideas have come this writer’s way from Readers… They include alternative styles…free and pay- as- you- go …again pun intended…..as well as locations… Below is an example of a self cleaning variety that can be either…A link to the video is worth a little fun look-see…No I am not seriously thinking it would fly in the Town but it was quite amusing…. It reminded me of a story my Aunt told me years ago when I lived in the Northshore …Neiman Marcus had a new type of toilet seat cover in their ladies lounge …it was a plastic cover that circled the seat with a push of the button before you sat down…My Aunt was skeptical and one day realizing she had an old lipstick in her purse she had been meaning to dump she decided to see if the cover was the real deal or a ruse…She marked the sea with a dot and then proceeded to push the button multiple times to see if the lipstick dot reappeared…I am happy to report it did not…BUT….like my Aunt I was not satisfied…because in the long run it was still up to the maintenance people to see that once the plastic cover reached the end of that package it was required to be replaced… Hmmm….

Location…location…location….

One Avid Reader’s suggestion on a viable location … Take the El Mar Parking lot to the north of Ham N’Eggs…use it for the valet service parking …(let them pay for the meter loss of revenue)…and install the bathrooms in that parcel as well…

Let’s see what the MPSC comes up with next Tuesday night at 7 pm ….

………………….

MARC V. MARCHELOS …

Looks like it comes down to a “He said…He said” on the pier powering the coral reef project … This writer was told by Louie Marchelos that discussions over cost never transpired due to bad relations that grew in 2007 between the former Comms. McIntee and Furth and  the lessees of the pier… When Mr. Marchelos inquired about any use of the pier for power in a follow-up exchange Marc Furth stated they had an alternative already in place…

At Wed. night’s Comm. Roundtable (prev post) the Mayor could not stop Comm. Clottey for telling what could only have been Marc Furth’s rendition of what took place…A $50,000 price tag for the use of pier for power to the reef project….Besides this apparent “fish tale”…we hear from those inside hall .. the Comm. seemed to be reading off her Blackberry!… WOW!… Is that even allowed ?… We also hear she made a beeline to call to see if it came off alright!… Any white Prius sightings at the Blue Seas after the meeting?….

……………..

CLARIFICATION …..

This writer had been told that the UOT was behind former Mayor Parker for Broward Judge and that signs were going up due to my slamming Comm. Vincent on putting one in his yard… The new Chair of the UOT contacted me yesterday to say…not so!… The UOT is not backing anyone for Broward Judge …The UOT only backs candidates in LBTS…. Glad to hear it…But…I still think the new Comm. should refrain from political signs in his yard ….and that Parker should not be a Broward Judge….

…………….

OPENING SALVO ….

The case #10-26301 has been filed 0n June 23, 2010 in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court …General Jurisdiction …Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Plaintiff v. Esther Colon Defendant…  A PRR was made for the filing…will post it … This writer was unable to get it online as of today…

………………….

AND THEY SAID WE WERE TOUGH ON OUR MANAGER DEPARTING …

We hear and can now see the countdown has begun for the outgoing City Manager in Fort Lauderdale..We also hear the Asst. City Manager may be just a stop-gap to an Int. City Manager as the Commission begins the process…. Question for LBTS will that be either one of our new Interim Administration?… Word on the street…we sure hope not….Behind the scenes it is said a full clean-up is being done after years of neglect and antiquated business practices… It will lead to a streamline..cost effective form of government…The desire of most…is that one or both new Int. Managers stay…. Any negative comments coming from the few Colon-istas left over in Town…are falling on deaf ears…. YEAH!….

ALL QUIET ON THE EASTERN FRONT …

Dear Readers … Another week has gone by with the new Interim Town Manager and a new  Interim Asst. Town Manager doing the business of the Town and proceeding with the Colon/Olinzock/ O’Brien payout inquiry as directed by the Commission…

The Mayor is continuing to put together the July 4th events with assistance from local businesses who besides having their Friday /Saturday night special events are adding to the mix a scavenger hunt on Saturday to the festivities …some time after the monthly  Chamber Beach Cleanup at 9 am…We also have the Chamber’s involvement in other areas of the 4th events over the weekend and that of the VFD who will be in the parade on Sunday and be host for the kids afterterward with food …pony rides … a water slide  ….and more in front of the firehouse and Municipal Park….It all culminates with fireworks at the Pier Sunday night… something that was overwhelmingly wanted by the residents…To offset the cost…just as in past years residents/ non-residents  and businesses may donate…as well as volunteer …(to volunteer contact Ron Piersante at the Chamber..

Commissioner Sasser as the appointed liaison is going over the Choice contracts and has met with the TM and Asst. TM to discuss it…so many residents at the end of there rope are hoping to get cut some slack somtime soon…

We hear that businesses and residents who had “hit a brick wall” over the last 2 years with Town staff are finally getting some assistance and “customer service”…imagine that…customer service…

The Town Boards are meeting next Tuesday and Wednesday ….although, there seems to be a snafu with the calendars online on the Town website…The Jarvis Hall May Calendar says MPSC meets Tues May 18th at 6:30/ BOA Wed. May 19th at 11 am Wed. (last time it’s in the daytime …in June it switches to the 1st Wed. of the month at 6:30 pm)/ P & Z Wed. May 19th at 6:30 pm…But…Town Of LBTS 2010 Reg Meetings Schedule states BOA & P & Z on Tues. May 18th!… Perhaps it was Town Clerk White overdoing the Jewish Holidays to be observed by LBTS to makeup for the past mistakes…(budget debacle last Sept…prev. posts)…Problem is the Town is overdoing it and observing holidays that are not necessary to observe such as Shavaut which begins at sundown on Tues. May 18th…

Some are saying they really like the open land between Town Hall and the ocean now that Minto is clearing the property for a while …(grass and benches  to come soon?)… Too bad it cannot stay an open “vista” to the sea…

Also, we hear ….there is much talk about the Senior Center and the fact that “trumped up” charges were made against the Director and about the contract for the funds from Broward that we now know were erroneous…orchestrated and downright dirty in this writer’s opinion…(Comm. Sasser 5/11/10 Comm. mtg.-prev. post)….The Director now has a “wish list” to improve what the former Town Manager (the instigator in the grief the Director took along with Comm. Clottey) herself stated was one of the most important services we offer to the community… With that sad chapter now officially closed…it is also this writer’s opinion much healing can be achieved with a some well deserved  TLC for the facility…There are available funds as we approach the “unemcumbered funds months” ahead of the next budget being finalized in Sept….We have not used the $12,000 earmarked for the defunct swimming program or the $7500 for the equally defunct Clottey concerts that amounted to just one last summer..Why not use that to make the Senior Center “wish list” come true?…

The list is compiled of the following… new carpet/new paint job/new 32-42″ flat screen TV with wall mount that tilts/ new ceiling lights (just as in Jarvis) / 9-12 new computer-laptops are preferred/ 12 card tables/new media projector with spare Epson lamp &  multi-projection ceiling mount/ two 42-48″ file cabinets 4 drawer & 2 reg. file cabinets 4 drawer/ twelve  48′-52′ 8 ” shelving/ three 48″ cork boards/ a stereo-cassette-CD player…

Final thought …anyone take a look at the computer class graphic that plays repeatedly on Ch. 78?…For new Senior Center participants who see that graphic and then actually walk into the dilapidated Senior Center quarters we now have for these classes…it must be a real shocker!… Time for a makeover!…ASAP!… Senior Center participants should contact your Commissioners and let them know you are on board with a much needed Senior Center update…

This month again  BSO has been quite busy getting the “bad guys”…including at Benihana last night…I have a request in for the info after getting a tip from a Reader and will post when it is received…but it sounds like the “sting” is ongoing in all corners of the Town…

Otherwise, all this writer hears from avid Readers …Commissioners….and Roving Reporters/Photogs …is all is quiet on the “Eastern Front”…as people are still happy with the outcome the election…..Happy with the Town being down to one monthly local newspaper… Happy the two opposing PACs are on hiatus …..And very happy to have witnessed a shortened Commission meeting last week ….

Here’s The Scoop … Meet The New CIC CHAIR… Liliana Pomareda … “Newbie” At The Helm …

May 6, 2010 by Barbara

WHEN YOU THINK THE CIC COULD NOT GO ANY LOWER …THINK AGAIN…

Dear Readers… You remember this woman…the “Youtube mom”…. she was the CIC member who tried unsuccessfully to stir things up in town by decrying falsehoods during and after the election including  racism along with her neighbor and Mayoral loser Joe Couriel!.. Last time we posted about the “Newbie” was when she and her neighbor and Vice Chair Joe Couriel went to the Spanish press after their landslide loss and gave their incorrect assertions as fact… and the reporter printed a slanted …one sided unsubstantiated article… Wasn’t Joe’s house up for sale around that time?….

This is who the CIC is in 2010?…Pomareda is the new Chair/ Couriel stays on as Vice Chair…and  on the board …Marjorie Evans, the failed CIC candidate from the north and no-show for the Master Plan Steering Committee since she was appointed by fellow CIC member and her ardent supporter “Clueless” Comm. Clottey..Still on board as well Cristie Furth ..Bob Roberts…Tom Carr..Carol Dickman …Gail Albohn … Joan Rysavy…Helen Swinghammer….  YIKES!…

Talk about losing your way…to champion this race baiting duo (in this writer’s opinion) to lead this CIC PAC ?…Many old timers will once again shake their heads in disbelief after hearing the news…..

New Chair Pomareda has been busy in her new role sending e-mails to the Commission…she was angry about the termination of former Town Manager Colon and filled her e-mail with much of her fellow board member Crisite Furth’s diatribe at the podium during public comments on April 27th…But where was Chair Pomareda when the opportunity arose… Hmmm.. She wants a pass for paying for a block party…thinks the restaurants need to be charged more for using the streets for weekle events…and thinks at $21 a year residents pay too much for a parking permit!… Her online introduction also “lifts” a good portion of her predecessor Chair Bob Robert’s false assertions about the Old Guard…and correctly speaks of when the CIC was 200 strong..that would be when Stuart Dodd and this writer were at the helm…and “Race baiting” would never have been tolerated …by any member …under our watch!..

Some of the recent e-mails ( e-mails to elected officials are public record)…sent by Chair Liliana Pomareda…The local Newspaper in town and the local businesses should be especially interested ….

Subject: Who is managing the Town?

Dear Mayor and Town Commission,

I would like to know the following:

* Why were no public comments allowed when you chose to fire the Town Manager Esther Colon without informing us the tax paying residents?
* Under what grounds was she fired on?

* Who is managing the Town at the moment?
* Who is paying for the new salary that has to be paid out to the new Town Manager if the exiting one still collects a pay check?

Thanks for the reply,

1) I would like you to know that I am forming my own opinions. I would also like to reiterate that when I speak at Public Comments I speak with my own mind and thoughts, not those strictly of the CIC. Yes I am a proud member of the CIC but do consider it unfair to be labelled as a member and therefore excluded for Public Comments. I say this because as you mention below “We have already had plenty of comments from the CIC as to why they feel the town manager was doing a good job”. Yes, I am sure of that however as an individual resident and taxpayer I have the right to Public Comments as any other resident member of the CIC or not.

2)Understood grounds are not necessary to fire the Town Manager however when the town’s finances are in order it strikes me that the current commission is willing to let her out of the so called “bad contract that was approved by the previous commission” at the taxpayers expense.

Understood, as you said “It was not the fault of this commission that her contract included one year’s severance for two years in the position” however I have the right to express my regret for the taxpayers to have to pick up this tab. Also, if as you say “This commission is dedicated to doing what they believe is best for this town” then why were the residents not allowed to Public Comment?

3) Who is the headhunter you have hired? Was the headhunter used for the interim Town Manager

4) On your comment about “The existing manager has been working towards getting “Fired” for a long time since she wanted out from this town” that strikes me as quite strong of a comment because after all the resistance from you and other residents the Town Manager Colon put up with I believe if she wanted to have quit she would have done so long ago. Again if the town is financially sound I do not see why what I seem to see as a “personality conflict” has to cost us the residents so much in our taxpaying money.
5) On your comment: “Please come to the meetings and form your own opinion”. Once again you see me at the Town Meetings and I have always formed my own opinion. It would be unfair of me to say your opinions come from the By The Sea Future or from some awful blog written in our town would it not?

6) I do also “appreciate our opinions are on opposite sides”, that is what makes this country great. I hope the current Town Commission helps LBTS grow into respecting opposite opinions and to learn from past election rudeness and racism.

Trust me I am giving this commission time to bring about positive changes, watching each step of the way as you know. I am involved in this Town because I care about it and want to see the positive changes. I have better things to do than to complain and speak for someone else so when you hear me speak or you read my emails they are my words because I care.

Subject: Block Party $ 100??? Kindly waive the fee.

Hello Town Commission,

I have been informed by the LBTS Code Enforcement that it would cost me a whopping $100 to have block party on North Tradewinds when we only want to have it on 1/4 of our block so the kids can safely ride bikes and mingle with neighbors? We are doing this for the children as a Summer is Here party and it is unfortunate that it would cost us 1/2 of what a Restaurant would pay to block of their street for 3 months weekends at a time??? How can that be? I am asking to block 1/4 of our block for about maximum of 4 hours of “one” day and yet a Restaurant pays so much less?

This is too much of an inconsistency and what I consider to be totally unfair to a local resident and a taxpayer. I am asking you to waive the $100 fee and if needed I would gladly submit the application as we would like to host this in a few weeks.

It seems to me that if local restaurants want to use our streets for weekends at a time then use this as a way to increase Town revenue, after all it increases the Restaurant revenues. Local residents should not have to pay for a block party, Restaurants should be paying a lot more to use our streets, months and months at at time.

I have to pay to park at a local meter, I have to pay to have a block party, help out the residents please.

Thanks for reply, 1. Application and request for fee waiver faxed to Town, I know writing to commission is not right way to ask, that is why I faxed and notarized app, still I feel need to communicate to our elected commission un fair balance in permit fees for residents compared to restaurants 2. Fee to use our streets for parties weekends at a time are too low for restaurants, 3. Yes I have a parking permit, think we as residents pay too much for. Will call to discuss ,

Are the above comments made by their new Chair the opinions of the CIC as well?…OUCH! …

Watch out LBTS…the CIC is now guaranteed to loud and full of trouble… Looks like “Newbie” got her stripes…

This is gonna be fun!…

Here’s The Scoop … Scene And Heard Around Town …

May 1, 2010 by Barbara

WAS THIS WHERE THE MOTEL ROOM WAS?…….

Did the former Town Manager have a room at the Public Safety Complex?… We have long heard rumors that there was one…Anyone taken a tour of the entire “Motel”?…. If so, did she also reimburse herself for staying there?…

……………………..

THE SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR IS SMILING BIG THESE DAYS ….

We hear Armilio  (Senior Center Director) is one “Happy Camper”…He had his annual Broward County Audit this week…Turns out no only did he pass with flying colors (just as he has every year prior)…It was the regular annual audit and turns out  (no surprise to this writer) the county were never contacted by the former Town Manager as she and “Clottey” and the “gang” made accusations on the dais and put this man and Senior Center participants through hell!… We also hear that the contract was misread by both Clottey and Colon and correctly by Comm. Sasser… there was never a fear of any county retribution for funds!…

……………………….

WHERE’S THE PAVILION CLOCK?….

What happened to the $1000 clock that former Comm. Silverstone and former Town Photog Marc Furth were making for the Beach pavilion?…We awaited some sort of campaign unveiling ..It never happened…The clock was shown over a year ago at a meeting…displayed in front of the dais…While it looked like a mail away for the kit project…it was paid for by us taxpayers and Comm. Silverstone said the 2nd component was in the works for the accompanying wind or some sort of measurement device…So where’s the clock and what was already paid for?…

……………………….

COMING OUT OF THE WOODWORK ….

Former Employees of LBTS are coming forward and contacting this writer (as many have before them) and other key players with a big “Thanks” …. for the terminations of Colon/Olinzock… and more than a willingness to provide information … in the aftermath…

………………………

AUDIT …

Are we in need of an audit?…YEP!… But not a full-blown $200,000 Forensic one!…With the new TM on board and the audits going on in neighboring municipalities (see link below)…we can get to the bottom of things w/out the big buck$….

http://www.investigation.com/claims_auditing.htm

…………………….

WHERE’S THE PARK?….

We hear the “Off-Site” warehouse may hold the park benches that were briefly used for the Minto Park some years back… Code needs to get the new vacant Minto property into compliance with sod and pull out those benches ASAP!…

BSO PROVING THEY ARE THE “ONE” FOR LBTS …..

We are told there was a burglary this week at the home a former elected official…and it was done during daytime hours…Before any blame is laid on the BSO from the uninformed …the specifics we are hearing put the onus elsewhere…The BSO has been on a roll with busting crime in town…The problem in the stats it is said come from unlocked doors …on cars and on properties whether intentional or unknown …Check ALL your doors people…before you exit ….the car or the premises…and if you see something that makes you think twice call 911!… As previously posted the BSO submitted their numbers to the municipalities and County yesterday… Don’t skimp on police protection in LBTS!…

……………..

2 LANES ON EL MAR DRIVE …..

The MPSC took a walk last week and looked at the A1A project… (still needs to be canned)…The El Mar Drive Project will be addressed as well…1 lane or 2 lanes…Members may want to go the the Town website and take a look at the 2007 special meeting…2 lanes must remain…Those that go to make a change in the lanes ….. will see a lot of bark with the bites of the walkers on El Mar Drive!…

…………………..

CHANGING OF THE “GUARDS” … 2 “BOBS” STEPPING DOWN….

The 2 PAC Presidents are stepping down in Town…UOT Pres. Bob Fleishman sent an e-mail saying he was done May with the UOT “blasts” being done today May 1st!..and CIC Chair Bob Roberts sent an e-mail a few weeks back looking for new board members…to possibly follow his counterpart in stepping down from the top position…. Any takers?….

………………….

LOOKING TO SERVE THE TOWN?….

Residents who want to serve the Town on a Town Board…Board of Adjustments…Those who advise the Commission on plans that think “outside the box”…will now be a night time job!… Meeting the 1st Wed. on each month at 6:30…Applications for the appointment need to be in for consideration on May 11, 2010…

………………….”

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT.?….

Are they or aren’t they the LBTS “Volunteer” Fire Dept.?… Questions are being asked about the lack of “Volunteer” on some apparatus these days …(outgoing VM McIntee brought it up on his last day on the dais)…along with the # of full- time employees?… Growing pains?..Or changes ahead?… The new Town Manager needs to be informed she is a non-voting member of the VFD and she has the right for oversight…It is clear the Townspeople want to keep the VFD …What is not so clear ….does the VFD want to keep the volunteer in the LBTS Fire Dept. emblem?…. The VFD website has been updated!…. 2 items of interest …the “knox box” …which we were told should have been in place for the gas leak situation last month…and “Fire Marshal Steve Paine”….(why not listed as VFD not Fire Inspector?)…

SHE KNOWS!……

It appears Town Clerk White and other members of staff do know how to e-mail after all…The memos coming out of town hall have rapidly declined as the #1 communication …Town Hall has now begun to enter the 21st century with the ousting of the last 2 Town Managers!….

JUDGE OLIVER PARKER?

“JAABlog published a new entry entitled “NO SO FAST …” on 4/28/2010 12:31:32 PM, written by JAABLOG.
NO SO FAST …

Buddy Nevins reports that Judge Lee Seidman has filed against Judge Susan Lebow. The article is here.

The announcement, however, is premature. Seidman did, in fact, redesignate his county court filing to Lebow’s race with Brenda Snipes’ Office, but that was strictly for campaign account reasons. He is still free to qualify in any race he chooses.

Seidman is currently en route to Tallahassee, with, we’re told, four circuit court qualifying packets. He may file against Lebow, or any other candidate, so long as the Friday at noon filing deadline is met. This one is coming down to the wire.

In other news, we’re hearing that candidate Oliver Parker may be jumping too. Possibly something to do with the Aleman/Perlman race” …

HE’S GOT COMPANY!… BEVERLY KENNEDY COUNTY COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE…

“She needs your support to become the new County Commissioner for Dist.4 to
represent the people of Broward. Beverly would like to finish the strategic plan
which she began in 2008 to solve Broward County Courthouse problems when
she proposed a plan to reform the Broward County Clerk of the Courts office,
Nov. 4, 2008 . Although she received over 148,000 votes, yet lost the
election, her plan and purpose for running has been over 70%
implemented !
Unlike the County Commissioner incumbent for Dist 4 , Bev
Kennedy’s plan would not raise taxes , nor waste our valuable financial
resources that should be used for other necessary Broward County Services.
Stay posted for weekly updates to: www.Beverly4Broward.com
Officially Beverly Kennedy is filed to be eligible as a Democratic
candidate for the Dist. 4 of the Broward County Commission Primary
Election Aug. 24,2010. She has chosen an excellent Deputy Treasurer
and Asst. Campaign Manager Randell (Randy) L. Pelham, who
professionally has over 17 years Law Enforcement experience, and
serves as Detective Sergeant of a Economic Crimes Unit.”

Here’s The Scoop …. Scene And Heard Around Town … “Bad Eggs”…

April 4, 2010 by Barbara

THE EASTER BUNNY’S CAR EGGED APRIL 2, 2010 …

Dear Readers … While life is moving on in LBTS and from what most report back to this writer, the general atmosphere in town is upbeat and positive …with one local newspaper out of commission? (pun intended) …. one local newspaper about to go monthly…and a lull of sorts due to the mess-up with the swearing- in date …the mess-up with the 1st Round Table  date and time … (prev. posts)…and the holidays along with Commissioners being out of town until they can meet on Monday April 12th at 6pm to start playing catchup with the overloaded Round Table agenda (due to staff overloading the 1st Reg. Comm. meeting on March 23rd)…Some “dye-hard bad eggs” are still acting “rotten”!…

This writer received not long ago a nasty e-mail from Hannah Hempstead trying to say I did not hear what I heard from her “galpal” , Silverstone Treasurer-wife of former Mayor Wardlaw-BFF of the Furths-and CIC board member Maryann Wardlaw … at the swearing-in last month…I did not respond to Ms. Hempstead…Why would I? ..I stand by my post…I turned as someone asked me about the small group sitting together to support Silverstone …and I absolutely heard Mrs Wardlaw make her most unkind statement about the new commission…no if, ands or buts!……In her nasty e-mail Hannah Hempstead..who may need to answer some Fl. Election Commission questions in the future for how much she contributed to the campaign (the CIC website still incorrectly states $500)….and how it was possible for her postcards which were included in the CIC door-hangers for the CIC candidates to state they were paid for by her without the candidate’s (Silverstone) approval?..It did have his scanned signature… ….One last remark to Ms. Hempstead …working in Hollywood..(according the what the Wardlaws told me long ago) as a producer…I cannot imagine you cannot figure out what “She’s a nasty piece of work means”…Ask around…

Somehow, the By The Sea Future newspapers were again “dumped” at my condominium…Old habits?……A 2-1 loss in all 3 buildings?…. Let your neighbors read the paper …please….

The new commission has continued to receive memos despite asking from day one for scanned e-mails…(prev. posts)..In response…instead of carrying out that “directive”…last Friday they received even more than usual……by way of 7 pages of a memo 4 times  for each of 4 Commissioner (No Clottey?)…for 28 pages for each one  or a total 113 sheets of paper distributed….to inform the Commission that they and their fellow Commissioners (Minnet/Dodd/Sasser/Vincent) were the subjects of changes made due to their re-election/election/change of title…One swift scan could have been sent to inform them all on one page of the switch over …along with the salient pages of the memo…What was the memo that cost 113 pieces of paper to be distributed in their boxes…”Marta has contacted Broward County-Environmental Protection and Growth Management and has requested to have your name added to the mailing list”… and a copy of the Broward County Water Conservation Incentives Program”…113 pages used for an environmental conservation memo…We can’t make this stuff up…

The Commissioners are having a terrible time with their computers…and one Commissioner has tried repeatedly we hear, to inform the town that it is a simple re-certification that needs to be done by the vendor…So far …no such action has been done…and the problem continues…

Word is the Town Manager is “spitting bullets”…over the fact that this writer posted the McIntee Suicide “supplemental” on March 28, 2010… (prev. post scoops, VFD)..  The one that clearly shows McIntee did not offer aid to the victim when he broke the VFD-SOP and entered a house where there was a possible suicide and a gun….He enterd as a “first responder” from the VFD ..TM Colon did not yet have it …and for some reason felt it was for her to have first?..Why?… It was a Public Records Request …and it had nothing to do with her!… Or did it?… After all, it does cast a bad light on her for insisting another VFD member be sidelined from the VFD until he was cleared of any wrongdoing…That case was nothing compared to this one…when it comes to “public safety”…. in this writer’s opinion…GULP!…

And finally there is this …”Bad Egg”….. Apparently the CIC Chair did not read the column next to his own when throwing his ill-will out on their website…..

Former Comm. Jim Silverstone wrote to his CIC supporters and listed what he considered his and his supporters  “accomplishments”…on that CIC site…included was this line…”It is now time to support our new commission and to stay informed. An important fact is we had almost a 40% voter turn out. The average in Broward County was only 9%. We care and it showed.”…

CIC Chair Bob Roberts – To his left-over members ..(if there are any?)…

“The March 2010 election was a different story. The opposition “Old Guard” supporters managed to adopt the same positions advocated by the CIC and the candidates it endorsed, and to convince a majority of the voters that the CIC was the cause of the dissension in LBTS. All three of the well qualified CIC endorsed candidates lost to less qualified candidates selected and endorsed by the “Unite our Town” (UOT) organization. In hindsight the CIC was not sufficiently forceful in getting the word out and encouraging the residents to vote.
Now it is important that the CIC organization remain active as a watchdog over the new administration. If they attempt to undo the major accomplishments of the prior administration over the past two years we must be ready to respond via the petition and special election route to repeal any adverse ordinances. Our aim is to keep Lauderdale-by-the-Sea the charming seaside community we all came here to enjoy!”

COMMENTARY ….

“The opposition “Old Guard” supporters managed to adopt the same positions advocated by the CIC and the candidates it endorsed”….

As one “Avid Reader” pointed out….Shouldn’t the CIC be happy that this was the case?….

BC-It’s called evolving!…

“and to convince a majority of the voters that the CIC was the cause of the dissension in LBTS. All three of the well qualified CIC endorsed candidates lost to less qualified candidates selected and endorsed by the “Unite our Town” (UOT) organization.”…

BC-To this I say…The CIC was the cause of dissension…dirty campaigning…and fear-mongering…(prev. posts)….How sad that the Chair of the CIC believes the overwhelming voters in this town are stupid and the new Commissioners were less qualified…that was certainly not so!…. Whatever happened to believing in the process?….

“In hindsight the CIC was not sufficiently forceful in getting the word out and encouraging the residents to vote.”…

BC-Chair Roberts, again … read the column next to you….Former Comm. Silverstone -”An important fact is we had almost a 40% voter turn out. The average in Broward County was only 9%. We care and it showed.”…

“Now it is important that the CIC organization remain active as a watchdog over the new administration. If they attempt to undo the major accomplishments of the prior administration over the past two years we must be ready to respond via the petition and special election route to repeal any adverse ordinances. Our aim is to keep Lauderdale-by-the-Sea the charming seaside community we all came here to enjoy!”…

BC-…For the CIC to return to being the “watchdog” rather than the “cheerleaders” they were for the previous 2 years… that alone is a plus!… As for the Chair’s “fear-mongering”…”fear-mongering”  is what lost the race for the diminished CIC…and to continue it on afterward…shows why the CIC of long ago is no more….Perhaps with a new Chair… there’s a slight chance to revive it?….

Finally- Note to the LBTS-BSO…Please keep an eye on my house this week…I am not looking forward to “Bad Eggs”…and “Blue Easter Dye”…making an appearance after midnight!…

more to come….

Here’s The Scoop … Scene And Heard Around Town … Counting Down … One More Day …

March 7, 2010 by Barbara

ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER …..

DISTRICT 1 CANDIDATE SCOT SASSER’S MOTHER…3/7/10….

Dear Readers … One day from now we will all know who the voters decided could lead us for the next 2-4 years in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea…Yesterday, once again the Town’s corners were full with supporters for Minnet/Sasser/Vincent… and except for a few students from Cardinal Gibbons receiving Community Service points for standing with a political sign…. the outside of town limits, paid help for Silverstone/Evans/Couriel was nowhere in sight…Hmmmm…

What was happening shows just why voters have to get it right on Tuesday when they fill in that second “bubble” on the ballot…The Furth-CIC  members walked around to the supporters of homes of Minnet/Sasser/Vincent with a “Goody Bag”…In it was a CIC gaggle of “gifts”…to try and sway their votes…HA!… Come on!… Too funny…. except for where some of them were placed…OOPS!…

Election Material

Hi Barbara It is now 12:45 March 7, 2010. I just returned from outside where I found all sorts of election material in MY MAILBOX. I thought it was illegal to place election material in the mail box, but you could place material near the mailbox. Please advise because I am very annoyed. I live at xxxx Poinciana St. LBTS 33308 Thanks xxxx. By the way this was paid for and approved by the Citizens Initiative Committee, not endorsed by any candidate.

…………………………

Here’s what was in one of the bags passed out today…Will supporters change their position on the candidates for plastic bags containing the last flier they received in the mail ……

“THEY MUST WALK THE WALK”…”COURIEL-EVANS-& SILVERSTONE HAVE WALKED THE WALK”… states the flier…..This writer agrees!…

That the Furths chose to use this old adage to describe their candidates….YIKES!… “As you may recall”… McIntee’s infamous statement in December ….that brought forth the “Quack, Quack” post!….(Bye, Bye, Bye…post)…

“IF  YOU WALK LIKE A DUCK, IF YOU WADDLE LIKE A DUCK, YOU GOTTA BE A DUCK” Vice Mayor Jerry McIntee 12/8/09 … (prev. post LBTS Agendas/Meetings cat. 12/11/09)..

Also included was the cheap minty green pen …a pseudo-ballot that wrongly displays the real ballot (using arrows  and check marks- no correct verbage/ “bubbles”!)…posted notes that read Re-elect Jim Silverstone Your Town Commissioner…(Note to self…vote for the other guy!)…Jim’s candidate business card…

And the best “gift”…..Jim”He’s not a nice guy” Silverstone’s red plastic band-aid holder that read “Re-Elect Jim Silverstone”…the one with the single band-aid in it that says “SWIFT”…(Couldn’t make it up any better”…It’s “Swift” alright!… We had some pretty funny quips from the “goody bag”recipients … …

Here’s a few… JIM SILVERSTONE BAND-AID JOKES…

“HE IS STUCK ON MCINTEE AND MCINTEE STUCK ON HIM!”

“LBTS YOU CAN’T PUT A BAND-AID ON THE PROBLEMS!”

“HOW MANY BAND-AIDS DOES IT TAKE TO STOP THE FLOODS!”

“TOO MANY SILVERSTONE BOO BOOS AND NOT ENOUGH BAND-AIDS TO COVER THEM UP!”

Readers are invited to add some more just send them in…

Also was a postcard that appears to be one for the Florida Elections Commission to get a complaint filed on… It is of the LBTS “REEF”…stating “Joe, Jim & Marjorie support the reef project”…. on the back it stated “Please vote 3/9/2010 Joe Couriel for Mayor etc…below it states”Pd. Pol. adv. by Hannah Hempstead-no candidate approved”…BUT… it contains Jim Silvsertones scanned signature!… Ms. Hempstead has already given donations to the candidates according to their required donation reports..so did she keep within the $300 maximum allowed and this was a way to bypass that amount?….If the candidates did not approve it as it states… …why does it contain Jim Silverstone’s scanned signature and why it it in a candidate approved “goody bag”?… Ms. Hempstead..Yep, that Hannah Hempstead the one who sits behind her opposition to snoop and to videotape fellow residents inside Jarvis Hall (prev.post)…should have a lot of company inf front of the Fl. Elections Commission…if the last candidate reports do not show the big buck$ paid out by the CIC-Silverstone/Evans and Couriel for BTSTimes ads…multiple mailers…The BTSTimes mailed and candidate paid for election newspaper…Silverstone’s half page Sentinel Sunday ad (larger the Town’s Municipal Election ad, Sunday in the Sentinel Local section-on the back page with ads…Hmmm…you would think the Colon Administration was hoping for a small vote turnout, assisting by using the last possible day to get it printed!)… Evans had ads in the Pelican and Hi-Riser…also MIA in her reports… We have been informed by those in the know, that purposeful delays in reporting expenditures or contributions are also grounds for finding probable cause!…OUCH!… One more biggie…Mayoral Candidate Joe Couriel who NEVER stepped down as the CIC Vice Chair!….GULP!…

Perhaps, the “Goody bag” for those who support their opposition will be the Candidates and their Campaign Managers…along with certain supporters having to face the music in Tallahassee …..and this one requires no street closures!…

…………………………………….

Candidate Marjorie Evans showed this writer once again why I have no respect for her…When she is awake …(outside of commission meetings)…. Mrs. Evans showed me loud and clear today why she tied her apron strings to the Furths-Clottey-Silverstone and Couriel…She too is a nasty piece of work…(Is there a vaccine for this?)… I was standing in the median on A1A and Commercial yesterday waving the signs for Minnet/Sasser/Vincent when she did a u-turn and stopped where I was standing..she waved and I did not respond…She rolled down her window to say “Did you like reading about yourself in the paper?”…I did not respond..She said “so you’re a minority business?”… I finally responded knowing full well what she was spewing…In the BTSTimes election newspaper…fully paid for by Evans/Silverstone/Couriel….A “Staff Writer”…(Moe McIntee most likely aka  the “Truth Deflector”)…wrote “Minority Profits” …In it she made such erroneous and stupid statements…the kind that could only be made by someone who has limited information on me, my business ..and especially the federal government and how a company works when doing business with the government…I expected as much from the “Truth Deflector”…She is known for not seeing the forest through the trees when it comes to her “Deflector” work…BUT …. from Candidate Marjorie Evans…a WOMAN who runs a non-profit organization..who is running on her expertize for working with the federal government…YIKES!… I told Marjorie “Marjorie I own a business and it’s a woman owned business..YOU of all people should understand that!”… I also told Candidate Evans “If you figure out how to get money from the government without bidding for it…you let me know!”…(The article said I do not have to submit competitive bids, “just send away for federal money-no questions asked”)…She rolled up her window and drove away…

OOPS!… I quickly realized when she drove away…SHE does know how!…It’s what we have been told she does best according  her “handlers”……and her running mates……SHE gets money from the federal government $15 million per year!…(Taxpayer’s money!)…As a woman (minority) who heads up a federally funded non-profit organization and receives $150,000 a year!…My business has no such luck!…..There are no federal funds with no questions asked for hard working for profit businesses…man or woman!……Marjorie Evans long steeped in getting non-profit government money….with a cushy salary …. just doesn’t get it!… Do you want this woman to represent you?…

By the way Marjorie…can I sue the BTSTimes for a racial slur?…When they called my husband and I “A wealthy, white couple”?…Were they “profiling?”…OUCH!…

Only 48 hours more to insert foot in mouth…..

more to come….
