“Sunshine law seminar open to public

FORT LAUDERDALE – Citizens who want to know more about accessing public records can join reporters and attorneys at this year’s First Amendment Foundation’s Sunshine Seminar.

The seminar will cover current sunshine laws, open government, open meetings and accessing public records.

“The whole purpose of open government is for us to keep an eye on what our government is doing,” said Barbara A. Petersen, the foundation’s president.

The seminar will be at the Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale from 9 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. Sept. 29.

The foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes education and training on people’s constitutional rights in an open government system. Pete Weitzel, former managing editor of the Miami Herald, helped found the organization in 1984 and served as president from 1984 to 1995.

In 1996, the foundation saw a need to change the yearly seminar to an “on the road series” to cities around the country. “People began requesting seminars,” said Patterson.

Costs for attendance range from $10 to $25 and includes the “2009 Government-in-the-Sunshine Manual”. For registration information, call 800-337-3518 or visit http://www.floridafaf.org/
