Always On The Playground

April 29, 2008 by Barbara

Front and center…Barack Obama and Reverend Wright…

The game is on…the verbal volleys are flying…

the cable news is having yet another mid-day adrenalin rush…

Wright is described as a crazy uncle….a thorn in Obama’s side…a nuclear bomb in his candidacy…

Obama kept calm…in the past weeks…tried to put it into perspective…interview after interview…

Just on Sunday… as he finally sat down on Fox Cable News with Chris Wallace…a good portion of his descriptive portrayal of why he is ready to be president…how he handles the ups and downs of being a candidate…including dealing with his pastor….

On Monday… Wright spoke again…

Obama still presented that even keel… even on this day….

So 24 hours later…he came out swinging…why?

BCbythesea….opinion….boys never really leave the playground…..

The pundits who have it right….

Rev. Wright brought this “kid” into his church…into the neighborhood…into the limelight…

Rev. Wright spent a lifetime of being the leader…

and in his mind the “kid”….jumped over him…by chance and by luck…

Obama was the beneficiary of the nasty Republican senatorial race in Illinois.. …where a seemingly easy race for the Republican candidate was “helped” into the toilet by a judge opening up sealed papers from the divorce of candidate Jack Ryan…suggestions of an “open” marriage etc….sent him packing…

No viable replacement….Obama…was now a Senator…in an easy win….

Then just as quickly …he gets a foot up…and just as easily…. enters the presidential race….

Rumblings of pushing Rev. Wright aside at the last minute as he was to introduce Obama at his historic  announcement…to become a Democratic candidate for president … are now disclosed…..

always on the playground….

no one likes to stop being the king….of the playground…

Wright practically said as much… to the Press Club…

He yelled it from the top of the sandbox…

Obama…must have finally seen it…

Game over….

Obama is now king of the playground…. he staked his claim…. finally….

but did he wait too long?…..

4/28/08 Opinion…

April 15 is day of dread…Richard Klitzberg …Boca Raton..

a portion…full text online….

Each year at this time, trillions of dollars are paid to governments to do their work. Despite, or perhaps because of, their inefficiencies governments are the fastest growing worker pool in America.

This makes their voice loudest when the subject of constraints is raised. …..

The top 1 percent of earners pays 40 percent of all taxes, and almost half of all Americans pay no taxes.

If our universities functioned this way, our Ph.D programs would be populated by the least intelligent students. If baseball teams were constructed this way, no player would hit over .200. And if Congress were composed of idiots, it would not be able to entertain and enact changes that diminish the tax burdens from its most productive citizens while rewarding its least productive citizens…..

While this opinion may ruffle some feathers…it is worth a look…

as in previous posts…as government grows its pool of workers…with pensions…perks and those who pay continue to shrink from the additional harsher methods that will surely be imposed….something’s gotta give…

An additional agreement with this author…

the truly super wealthy…usually the very same that propose more taxes from the simply well off…the politicos…. Kennedy….Clinton ..Kerry….. or Global elites…Gates…and his group…hide or export their wealth….to friendlier parts of the world and a series of “trusts” and “foundations”….

Bill Gates’ surrogate father…Bill Gates’ partner in retaining the inheritance tax….Bill Gates …is designated to take the reins from Warren …if he ever step down…at Berkshire Hathaway… so Bill will retain his #1 status of world’s wealthiest man…

Warren Buffet…knows about the recession…the inflation…and what people need……

He owns Dairy Queen….and now he will own Wrigley … so he will give the people what they need…..comfort foods…in times of discomfort…

so much sugar…might ease their pain…when Warren and Bill get the inheritance tax back into play…….it’s on their list…

Mayor: Trade trip’s a bargain…Broward County mayor…also a ceremonial post as LBTS Mayor is…wants us to pay for her and other commissioners to be “ambassadors” …as they go to Europe…

Time to get real…and put on the breaks…for all levels of government…

do not tell us taxpayers what we will go without…and then ask for yet another perk…

FAU Ocean project getting $8.75 million…

state lawmakers earmarked the money fro ocean energy research project includes Boca campus in a consortium to find alternative energy sources in Florida…Originally wanted $10 million…it will further the centers main projects which includes placing a turbine in the Gulf Stream to create energy…using deep ocean water as an air conditioner for coastal areas and generating energy from extreme temp. differences that naturally occur in the ocean….

Insurance

Health premiums outpace incomes…

Timely as BCbythesea…and hubby deal with our new insurance premiums for the year…but the article in the business section states 29% increase over 5 years…those who had that kind of change……are lucky…

for most it is much higher… including our small business…

Here’s The Scoop

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

Bcbythesea hears that there may have been a heated exchange at the town development office… today…

So heated that the police were called….

an angry resident was at odds with the development head Frank and Tatiana…over a shed and a pool…an alleged  mistake made in their office…and a perceived injustice with how two separate properties were treated … so differently….

if true…someone needs to get to the bottom of it…and provide equal treatment ….to remedy both residents….with variances…. if they are called for….

more to come….

Here’s The Scoop

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

BCbythesea is still concerned with the advice given by the new Town Attorney at the Sunshine Law Workshop… a few weeks ago…

Mr. Abbott said that a Commissioner or Board member could  have one way communication…

speak …email or phone another member …..if they first prefaced it by….”do not respond”….

as long as the recipient does not respond ….it is not sunshine…

I have asked another attorney…

The response was…he thinks this is bad advice…

I would prevail upon the Commission and Town Hall to get a ruling on this from the Sunshine Law Ethics expert in Tallahassee…before any sitting members violate a Sunshine law if this is not correct information…

better to be safe….  in my humble opinion….

Not So Fast

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

www.sunsentinel.com

Not so fast Commissioners…Town Manaager…

At the direction of the commission …following an agenda item put on by Comm. Silverstone…the Town Manager was to look into going Wi- Fi within a perimeter around Town Hall..due to the cost for going town-wide… being a non- starter…

Sun-Sentinel today…

Goal of Free Wireless Proves Elusive for Cities in Palm Beach County…

Governments and Wi-Fi firms at odds over cost…terms…

Boyton Beach  put it in …2005…it was short-lived…they dropped their provider after the company failed in system maintenance…

They are not alone…cities…that number 305 have attempted the usage of Wi-Fi…most are still under construction…with 38% operating …and 5.5%  that failed…

DelRay Beach and West Palm Beach …their plans have stalled…

This project …like the Jarvis Hall enclosure should be dropped…

Village Grille… Lauderdale By The Sea

Sitting outside on a windy Sunday evening…a patron of this establishment would never believe that restaurants are feeling the pinch…

Maybe it’s the Sunday Blue Plate Special….Pot Roast… potatoes and all….generous portion…a true comfort food…that delivers…

Conjures up the childhood taste buds for sure from the BCbythesea hubby….one very happy dining camper!

I had my favorite the Thai chicken salad with peanut dressing…served with a whole sesame topped breast of chicken… again generously portioned and presented with flair….

Service was prompt and all around seemed to enjoy the weather..the service and especially their meals…

Village Grille has truly made its mark for a  destination of choice for Friday night Jazz on the Square… special sports/ holiday celebrations… or the  blue plate special on a Sunday night!

Total for meal..with 2 beverages and tip…$40….

12 Step Program

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

“Stay away from the Topix Blog…..”

words from former “addicts”…and those who abstain out of principal!…

Cautionary comments from those who went…and turned away…

an overwhelming group …considering the slow death that it appears the numerous blogs are experiencing from days of non- postings…

Those truly hooked…who feed off each other… a small group who know who they are…and can be identified though their particular rants coinciding with LBTS events… or a posting on this site….

continue to hope for a resurrection…even more depraved than in the past…

singling out persons… attempting to start anew…doing what this site will not… with personal attacks….

no opinion on the topic …… using their names…keeping on point….

So here we go…..

Step 1…delete the Bookmark to Topix Blog…DONE…

Step 2….Breathe in the fresh air….DONE…

Step 3….Stop anyone who inquires ….from inquiring….DONE…

Step 4…. Realizing it is only a 3 Step process….imagine that!

Civic Organizations

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

Citizens Initiative Committee….

New Board…

Chair..Cristie Furth…previous Board member

Vice Chair ..Maureen McIntee

Secretary…Bob Roberts

Treasurer… Tom Carr…previous Board member

the Board grew …per a member vote from 7-9…

additional new Board members…

John Thompson…previous Board member

Renee O’Neal

Mary Ann Wardlaw

Loyola Gray

Karen Hunsaker

These 9 will decide which direction the LBTS largest civic organization will go…

They are in majority position now… with 4 members on the commission and the majority of seats on the town boards…

it will be a fine line…between the past of being a “watchdog” group to what defines them going forth….

What will be their issues?

Will they be in concert with the commission…or independent?

Will the organization grow….remain steady or decline due to the change of their position in town?

North Beach Civic Organization…

will meet in Jarvis Hall Monday May 12…6:30 pm

presenting Jerry Bookman…Fl. Ins. expert…

How will the turnout be for this meeting compared to the packed room last time…when the topic was Palm Club and De-annexation?

Will Mark Brown once again address these issues?

Will the north end be representative of both sides…. for and against?

Will beach access be discussed?

This organization may need re-defining also…. due to now being in the minority on the commission and on town boards….

What will be their issues?

Will they grow … remain steady or diminish with those on opposing side of the annexation/sewer/ beach access walking away?

Quite an interesting time …with the changeover almost 3 months ago…

Note: Those in charge of both organizations….

will be keeping track of the current majority on the commission…. Town Hall Administration…for any clues who could be the majority in the next election… nearly 2 years away…

BCbythesea….opinion…

depends on the following factors….

VFD implementation….

AMR….implementation

Budget….millage rate….projects… forecast for 2009

Town Hall Administration daily operations…

updates forthcoming ….

The Lemieux Report

April 28, 2008 by Barbara

www.thelemeiuxreport.com

4/28/08

Special Budget Update…

House/Senate concluded on Sun. afternoon…

proposed budget cuts the pay of State Legislators 5%…

and…includes $110 million in new fees…

Nursing homes $164 million in reductions…

but an additional $55 million from Lawton Chiles Endowment ..alloted for healthcare and senior services…

State colleges and Universities…6% increase

2008 budget up for full vote by the chamber this week includes…

no new taxes …does not dip into the Fl. Rainy Day Fund…

Topic 1.

Constitutional Amendment Per TBRC

final meeting was last week…Tax Budget Reform Committee…

scored final passage on 3 highly debated proposals…

tax trade off…cut 25% from property taxes currently allocated for education funding…

decrease an est. $90 billion …school fund…balanced out through imposing at least a 1 cent sales tax increase…eliminate 246 sales tax exemptions in the current state tax law and further cut state budget…

state funding of religion organizations… vouchers…trying to overturn 2006 Fl. Supreme Court decision …

65% education funding… with 65% minimum “classroom use “requirement…

right now “classroom use” is under 60% and the clarification of what exactly constitutes that term is murky…such as includes…school nurses and guidance counselors…

Teachers Unions are threatening court action…citing TBRC overstepped their scope…

4 other proposals…to amend Fl. State Constitution will appear on Nov. ballot..also proposed by TBRC..

allow option sales tax for community colleges

property tax breaks for working waterfronts

conservation lands

property owners who improve energy efficiency and windstorm protection…

Bottom Line…

work of the 2008 TBRC is nearly completed…funding for group will end…will present final recommendations to Governor/ Legislators …committee will then relinquish their posts…

Topic 2…

Inflation – It’s Here…

Federal government reports consumer prices are on the rise …posting substantial increases over the past 15 months…

1st 3 mos. of 2008…consumer prices increased at a seasonably adjusted rate of 3.1%

compared to 4/1% for all of 2007…

index energy…rose 17.4% in 2007…

advanced 8.6% in 1st Qtr. 2008…

food….5.3% in 1st Qtr.2008…

4.9% in 2007

index grocery …5.9% annual rate w/ whopping 15.7% in cereal/bakery goods..

Note: box of cereal…around $6….blame it also on the ethanol… BCbts…opinion

Bottom line…

inflation is back impacting economy in ways Americans have not seen since the late 1970’s…

Topic 3….

Be Sure What You Sign…

The 1st Dist. Court of Appeals …this week…ruled unconstitutional the signature revocation law for petitions to amend state constitution…noting signature revocation is not referenced in citizen initiative provision of Fl. Constitution…

Case in question…Fl. Hometown Democracy ballot initiative…which was defeated earlier this year….after failing to meet number of required signatures…

Recent changes to Fl. statute allow a petitioner to remove their name from pre- signed petition….legislation allowed pro business to organize revocation drives to convince people to remove their names…

Bottom line…

dispute will likely go to Supreme Court…

Topic 4…

Development debate in Florida House…

another initiative grounded in debate over Hometown Democracy ballot proposal should see final vote before session over this week…

House debated development bill that changes governing growth management to allow for more affordable housing ..

the proposal would prohibit citizen initiatives to change comprehensive plans …but require neighborhood meetings before landowners can approach local gov. to propose changes…

senate has not debated yet…

Bottom line…

Hometown Democracy supporters will continue their effort to gain ballot access in 2010

Topic 5…

Democrat Delegates…

DNC delegates will play some role …on May31st….(keep saying that…)

DNC …super delegates will decide no matter if Fl. is in or out…. matters little…

Things to watch…

Brew Blog…Miller Beer blogs…

Business groups rally to oppose education change…

Final vote CSX commission…train s…Orlando…

final version will include turnpike toll increases 25%…leasing Alligator Alley…

Business in the green…website…www.myfloridalicense.com
