Let’s Play Ball!

February 26, 2008 by Barbara

Log online for a map of where the teams are playing for Spring Training!

Better than Punxsutawney Phil…..when it comes to seeing how much winter is left!

Just wish the Marlins were not going to the Orange Bowl….a bitter pill for us season ticket owners….

bcbythesea hubby says that instead of spending the reported 70 million recently to complete the cricket stadium at State Road 7 and Sunrise….and the expected 40 million+ to keep the Orioles in Fort Lauderdale for their spring training….a stadium for the Marlins could have been here in Broward!

Judges Asked To Lead By Example

February 26, 2008 by Barbara

www.jaablog.com

Jaablog…interesting idea…to help stop the furloughs reported to be thrust upon employees of the courts in Broward and statewide.

The challenge being made is to the judges who earn between 137- 146 thousand a year….to give up 5% of their pre-tax earnings and donate it to those workers who make 35 thousand and less. Many are single parents who live paycheck to paycheck.

The plan could accumulate 627 thousand dollars in Broward and 7 million statewide.

If the furloughs take place employees could be put on them for up to 22 days…. with some extending out to a full month of work.

Also reported in the same post…. The St. Petersburg Times reports that 22 sitting judges are “double-dipping” by also exercising early retirement income!

Quite a challenge…let’s see if anyone rises to accept it?

Next Auto Show

February 25, 2008 by Barbara

While walking through the Chicago Auto Show a few weeks back, my Son- In – Law had no time or interest in the Hyundai or Kia exhibits…but made a beeline for the luxury models!

He may have to re-think this at the next Auto Show…according to Yahoo News…Jaguar and Land Rover are about to be bought by Tata of India!

The key issue to be addressed…whether the source engine and other systems would still be made by Ford with English parts?

My question…. what will it morph into this time? ……The Jag became a Ford inside and out when Ford bought the company.

Confusion Continues…

February 25, 2008 by Barbara

Traveling south this afternoon just added to the confusion of my previous post about the LBTS Chamber’s Taste Of The Beach on Wed. Night!

First stop Town Hall…out in front… a banner….Taste Of The Beach 6- 9 pm…I thought I must have read the banner at the Chamber wrong over the weekend and reported it wrong!

I then drove A1A to check it out…I was right! The banner …Taste Of The Beach 6- 10 pm!

Final stop Print Dynamics…an underwriter for the event…on the front door…a poster…. Taste Of The Beach 6- 9 pm!

Also on the poster…donation $37…at the door…$40!

Come on Chamber….somebody really dropped the ball!

Ballet Gamonet

February 25, 2008 by Barbara

A friend of mine told me of her friend Ann Chamberlin, a LBTS resident and supporter of the Ballet Gamonet dancers.

This company and their outstanding dancers received rave reviews in the Feb,12, 2008 Miami Herald wwwmiamiherald.com

Unfortunately times being what they are for the arts…the dancers are not being paid.

Ms. Chamberlin is organizing a grassroots remedy to help out these talented dancers!

Interested in helping? contact her at: 954- 942- 9698 or email arcdance@comcast.net

I hope that the Miami Herald follows up on their story with this one…. and will help spread the word.

A follow- up story will be posted, and I wish Ms. Chamberlin and the Gamonet dancers a windfall of donations!

The Papers Today

February 25, 2008 by Barbara

First off nice to know so many are enjoying this…..

www.sunsentinel.com

Front page….second part of the 3 part series of foreclosure… (previous post shows 8 in LBTS.)…. Today’s focus is on Miramar…mortgage defaults…foreclosures…adjustable -rate mortgages…

I remeber quite vividly, how many times over the last few years those who bought… putting 0 down…finding a balloon payment looming in the their not so distant future….mortgage brokers…(who I believe should take much of the to blame for this mess)…tweaking the numbers to overextend the buyers…and those who actually face double trouble now for getting equity loans …and using them to be speculators in real estate.

This is why so many are walking away from deposits on condos…which I have heard might be the case right here in LBTS….(hearsay of course)….even now when I hear that sales are good at a new development….sales and a deposit do not equal…the guarantee that the buyer will be there in the end!

Cuba’s Old Guard keeps a grip on its future….we here in LBTS know all too well what an Old Guard firm grip feels like…luckily we had the ability to vote them out!

He’s Back! Ralph Nader…back in the thick of things…in the papers, on Tim Russert…happy news to the Republicans…. a return of that sinking feeling in the bellies of Democrats!

What exactly are his Green Party numbers these days?

Asked by Russert yesterday about the impact he had on Al Gore resulting in George Bush becoming the victor….implying it was Nader’s fault…Nader responded…incredulously… to Russert…..it had nothing to do with the candidates themselves?

I like Ralph Nader…not his politics…but the way he actually lives the way he expects and espouses other to live….unlike any of the other politicians in both parties…who live large, cloaked in trusts, off shore accounts, government top of the line medical care, pensions etc….

Old cruise ship terminal spurs fight over land use…. New York…land use…neighborhoods…congestion…polution…quality of life…developers…and money!

No matter the size…the location…it will always be prevalent with moving ahead with development…

Editorial ….Deerfield’s invocation…(earlier posting on this)… the distraction of this being front and center…editor’s bottom line…religion has no place in city hall…..we need to deal with this here….ASAP but no distraction…. just a quick agreement…rotate faiths…if they are interested in participating…keep it simple…(new mayor…please do not cross yourself as the former mayor did.)

Opinions…Evolution and Creationism…Pompano resident, Gunther L. Eichhorn…excellent…worth a read!

Local section…Pompano Beach…the horse industry and their demise..due to the slots…seemingly unfair tactics by the race park owners… and the future of harness racing disappearing altogether. The Sentry addressed this about a year ago.

Contracters with connections? Four builders donated to six current school board member’s campaigns ….Hmmmm….

Pompano Beach is currently under the skeptical eye of the voters for accepting donations from those who might come before them…www.flsentry.com

(J.P. Bender…previous articles)…and right here in LBTS it was an issue and still is with our new mayor and those who donated to her campaign.

This is a case in point article why so many think this is a definite conflict and she will have to recuse herself.

Disney wines and dines both parties….big bucks to both parties…and picks up the tab for events…I feel just the same as I did about Waste Management giving big time galas at League of Cities Conventions…yes, I know it’s business…yes, I know our representatives need to attend the convention…but I hope that next time whoever attends thinks twice about the gala! Waste Management will be coming before all those who might attend in future…when it is time to decide on using their service.

www.miamiherald.com

Business section…My View…Tom David…Is going green overated?

Worth a look…put the politically correct stuff aside for a minute…and look at the costs…(previous post…recycling costs)…and what is accomplished?

I just can not wrap my head around the “carbon neutral” thing…and if you look at the new millionaires…young…energetic and in the corporate world of “carbon neutral” exchanges in the millions for corporations and countries to do business as usual…only to feel no guilt, probably write it all off… and the brokers…. they are these new millionaires…looks like a big shell game to me!

More to come later…..

Take a look at Bob Norman’s letter to Wayne Huizenga…

If you are not a regular reader of Bob’s blog…link on and enjoy!

He has some great historic articles…including the LBTS article about former Mayor Parker…

in fact right after that article came out…on the front page of the New Times….the New Times boxes suddenly disappeared from town and from Sea Ranch Plaza!

New commission….maybe those boxes can come back to town along with boxes for any paper willing to pay for them in town!

Evening Walk

February 25, 2008 by Barbara

Went on the usual evening El Mar walk….saw Peanuts walking home from town….and encountered the terrible predicament all walkers face after the rain!

To make it down the road you have to spend time in the street….the sidewalks are flooded! We need some temporary sidewalks with barriers to protect our citizens and our tourists!

On one side in front of Minto (west side) both the sidewalk and the road is flooded….across the road the sidewalk is closed altogether.

It gets no better walking south… more flooding on the west, less on the east …no sidewalk in front of Oriana….and no lights!

I just wish all the money going towards Seagrape and Washingtonia would have gone to our “Scenic Highway!”

Some will say this was the plan with making ElMar Drive one lane….well now is the time to deal with it while keeping it two lanes…fix the drainage…and give us a temporary buffer….please!

A neighbor contacted me today and told me of her concern with a fire hydrant south of Oriana……with some building going on very close to it. She said to go take a look and we did….also I know that a few commissioners are aware…..

so I know this neighbor will get an answer.
Perhaps the construction is to put something underground? I hope that it is something like this and not that plans were not adhered to yet again?

One BSO police car circling ElMar…was all we can report….still missing in action from what used to be the norm.

Last but not least….why is it that people do not customarily move to one side when passing on the sidewalks…it seems to be a form of walk rage…who will jump off the sidewalk first! It use to be that each person or group moved to their right…. remember?

Events and Confusion

February 24, 2008 by Barbara

Tuesday- the 26th- 7 pm Commission meeting at Jarvis Hall…previous post has agenda and comments…and link to LBTS government site.

Wednesday- the 27th – Chamber’s Taste of the Beach…some confusion though….

The Future’s paper neglects to say time and location…on its front page…with a cost of $37… back page events….has correct place… but …5 pm start

The Times has it under events to be held at El Prado, 5- 9 pm for $35… ..

A visit to the chamber online….their calender presents the event at El Prado, 5- 9 pm for $35…

The signs outside the Chamber….6- 10 pm

The Chamber President at the Commission meeting announced the location to be… The Lauderdale Beachside Hotel parking lot…located at the north end of ElMar Drive.

The amount…..we will see!

As previously posted…no political paper booths please….the chamber should be non- political!
